MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's presidential election is too close to call between a leftist anti-poverty campaigner and the conservative ruling party candidate locked in a tie, a respected exit poll said on Sunday.
The extremely close vote raised fears of a political crisis if any of the main candidates challenge the results and call street protests.
Pre-election polls had showed Felipe Calderon of the ruling party and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the left-wing former mayor of Mexico City, in a virtual tie. Exit polls from Mexico's two main television station and the El Universal newspaper said they could not declare a winner.
El Universal said the race was between Lopez Obrador and Calderon. Neither of the TV stations mentioned Roberto Madrazo of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which ruled Mexico for most of the 20th century.
The Federal Electoral Institute was expected to announce official results at around 11 p.m. If it is unable to call a winner, Mexico could face days or weeks of legal wrangling and protests similar to the fight that followed the U.S. presidential election in 2000.

Could it be that the "polls" were garbage?

The words "poll" and "garbage" tend to be synonymous.

Too early to say. Can't figure out where these returns are coming from nor are there any raw totals to find.

I've read that is why Reagon created NAFTA. I don't beleive its working. Too much corruption and influence from the drug dealers. Canadians are pretty good people, even better if you could eliminate the liberal garbage they are being fed.
"And beyond that, we don't want a committed leftist on our Southern border, given that Chavez would INSTANTLY have an ally 1000 miles closer to the US than before."
Chavez has allies in the US already.

Isn't that the MO of the leftist...lie all the time, trying to fool the folks...that'll usually backfire on 'em cause....it probably isn't that close and Mexicans will vote the conservative in. Kinda like what the lefties tried to do here in 2004....didn't work for skerry...won't work for the commie candidate in Mexico.

The only thing not working on that post is the spelling. FR has a spell-check, use it. AT least gets REAGAN'S name right!

uh huh. Except they are just assholes and idiots, instead of being in charge of an entire country.
You can try to hedge all you want, but a PROSPEROUS Mexico is the only SUREFIRE way to check illegal immigration into our country. To want anything else is pure lunacy.

The ONLY way that we will EVER solve the crisis that is our Southern Border is Mexico FINALLY becoming a prosperous country. You are going to single handedly take the fun out of this for the extremists. For you are spot on correct. Only question is: how to do it? Massive US government aid ala NAFTA, CAFTA, and the Maquilodora program (which have helped but not fixed); or brutal and inhumane sanctions? Maybe a new War On different Drugs. From the conservative aspect, I have not seen liberty expansion and economic growth from any of the aforementioned programs. Military intervention must be a last resort. What lies between the current situation and military intervention I do not know. I do believe that the tension and animosity is not good.

Massive Government aid has SURE helped areas of Africa and all that. No, the only way for the Mexicans to make their country prosperous is to do it THEMSELVES. Maybe them electing someone other than Fox will push them along that path. We might not fully see it within our lifetimes, but hopefully they will be able to get there. We can help some I guess, we can be friendly to them, trade with them as we see fit, assist them via works or if they need help setting up industry, sure we could do that too, but not massive amounts of $$$. That never really helped anyone that we DID NOT invade or defeat in war (ala Japan and Germany, or Iraq for that matter).

Do they do a run off election in Mexico if in the first time no one gets 50% of the popular votes? No, just one election.

Their election website
http://elecciones.reforma.com/prep2006/default.htm
has a breakdown by region.
Region Calderon AMLO
Circunscripción 1 (Nortwest) 101,116 41,969
Circunscripción 2 (Northeast) 237,354 101,319
Circunscripción 3 (Central/SW) 72,652 85,467
Circunscripción 4 (Central/SW) 97,449 161,986
Circunscripción 5 (Southeast) 102,031 116,609
Circunscripción 2 has significantly more precints reporting and they are heavily pro-Calderon. The final result will certainly be closer. Regional results suggest +3% for Calderon but there may be intra-region differences as well and I do not know enough about Mexico to figure out those.

Comparing Mexico and Canada is where the lunacy is. The cultures are completely different. The corruption and influence of criminals is what keeps certain areas of Mexico poor. Its not the lack of a 8 lanehighway directly into the US's heartland. It's fine if you want to discuss or debate. If you only want to flame or argue then leave me alone.

LOL, figured that's what you'd come back with. Now for the English....

Who is comparing the cultures? Not me. Who wants them both to prosper for their own good, you can blame me for that. AS for your 8 lane highway, the NAU hysteria is SO yesterday. Besides that damned Eisenhower (I spelled his name for you since you'd get that one wrong too I'm sure), already BUILT the highway.

That never really helped anyone that we DID NOT invade or defeat in war (ala Japan and Germany, or Iraq for that matter). That is precisely the point. Liberals scream about the inhumanity of warfare. Yet every country that the USA has engaged, including Viet Nam, has emerged better off socially, economically, and politically. The case may be made that Mexico and the citizenry would benefit more from a US military operation than they would from a UN sponsored program.
