Gwinnett County commissioners struck down plans Tuesday for a Hindu group to build a temple down the street from a second, larger temple in Lilburn.
Commissioners made the unanimous decision because a temple of its size would be out of character with the area and the neighbors, said commissioner Bert Nasuti.
"I've never seen a church or a religious organization that didn't desire to grow," Nasuti said. "This is too much structure for this property."
Ramesh Suhagia, speaking for the Hindu group, proposed scaling down the size, but to no avail.
The 13,000-square foot temple for the Swaminarayan Satsang Mandir of Atlanta would have been on on four acres on Lawrenceville Highway. The property is behind a Walgreens in a largely residential negihborhood about a mile from a second temple more than twice as large already under construction by another Swaminarayan Hindu congregation. Because the larger temple is in Lilburn's city limits, its builders did not need permission from county government.
Leaders of the group denied construction permission Tuesday said they would meet together and sort out their options. Mansukh Dhanani [cq], president of Swaminarayan Satsang Mandir of Atlanta, said his group would look for land elsewhere in Gwinnett County, and expressed optimism.
"I've lived for 10 years in Gwinnett. My business is here," he said. "Man will let you down. God will not."
Not correct, Hindus have started to fight back recently against the most disgusting Islamist violence, after tolerating the Islamist aggression for...
...HUNDREDS OF YEARS IN INDIA!
I read the exremely pithy "wrong god" comment not as a dig or comment about the goodness of Hindu beliefs, but rather as a sarcastic comment about the close-mindedness of the county commissioners. IE: that this was all just B.S. and the real issue was "wrong god" and if they had been trying to build a Baptist Church the pews would be going in by now.
That's how I interepreted that comment. Are you a native American English speaker? (not intended as a put down - I speak only Spanish and miss all jokes, sarcasm and have ordered "balls" in a TJ cantina when I wanted eggs to the howls of those around me.)
I simply stated that they have and will resort to violence, if provoked. No time frame was involved. Your statement is self-contradictory........
You bet there is. Let's put it this way, there are more Patels in Lilburn than there are Smiths.
Yeah Jack--I kinda interpreted the "wrong god" line the same as you--if it were a Baptist church going in there they wouldn't have cared that there was another down the street or how big the structure was. I think Hinduism freaks a lot of evangelicals out. Unless there is a large Indian community in your vicinity, the only Hindu thing you might come across are the Hare Krishnas--and they're not around as much as they used to be. Actually Hindus don't really flaunt their religion around too much.
Agreed.
If you're a mirror image of muslims, then we have a problem.
I knew that was what you meant, I also had a feeling it was going to be misinterpreted mighty fast.
On the contrary, India is a perfect example of a dhimmiocracy. The Hindus only respond to extreme acts of aggression by the Muslims. The Indian Government bends over backwards to accomodate Islamic Fundamentalists.
Christians state that there is one God, and also should try to not pick fights with those of other opinions (although they should try to persuade them to become Christians, as Christ is the only way to salvation (and this causes a lot of opposition from some Hindus and ultra Orthodox Jews, who don't seem to understand that it is because of this one way to heaven, and a Christian's trying to get as many people as that Christian can to heaven, that Christians evangelize. Hindus and ultra Orthodox Jews, amongst others, seem to view this as stealing or coercing people away from Hinduism, Judaism, etc., and not in the same light as Christians, who are trying to spread knowledge of the only way to heaven to all men).
Christian bashing ping. (if you're up for an argument).
Christian bashing ping. (if you're up for an argument, primarily with atheists).
Many are Russian, or of Russian descent.
The area I live in (Northern New Jersey) has a large Indian community and most are Hindus. I have never once been offended in any way, shape or form by Hindus. Hindus are kind, peaceful, law abiding people who respect other's beliefs. They are a model immigrant community and excellent neighbors. You will never see a mob of Hindu gangbangers or thugs, their parents teach them to respect others, to seek higher education, to work hard and make a good life for themselves, is that not the kind of people we should welcome with open arms?
BTW- I'm not a member of any religion. Yes, there are conservative Republican agnostics. I have no beef with anyone who espouses faith in any sane religion.
I do not consider Islamic fundamentalists to be sane, rational people.
I would prefer a Hindoo temple over a mosque anytime. All the Hindoos I have met are friendly, polite and integrate into our society well.
I especially like the God that looks like an elephant, for some reason the image of it tickles my funnybone. To neach his own I guess.
