Dell investigating exploding laptop incident

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dell laptop computer seen bursting into flames in photographs on the Internet was being examined as part of the company's probe of the incident, Dell Inc. said Tuesday.

"We have captured the notebook and have begun investigating the event," Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said, confirming the computer was made by Dell but declining to specify the model. No one was hurt in the incident, she said.

The report of an exploding laptop at a conference in Osaka, Japan, accompanied by digital photos, was first published on technology industry news Web site The Inquirer last week.

Dell in December 2005 issued a battery recall for some of the batteries in its laptop due to overheating issues, according to the company's Web site.

Camden said it was too early to draw any conclusions and added that it did not appear that the incident had anything to do with the battery issues related to the recall.

"From here it's going to be a very methodical and meticulous process to figure out what happened," Camden said.

I once had a Dell that I purchased before I knew any better. It blew up all the time.

Was the notebook on the run?

Don't buy the Islamic version if you don't want an explosion.

I have owned about 25 PCs in my life. All but about 5 were Dells. I had trouble with three, none of them were Dells.

It blew up all the time

It blew up several times, and you kept plugging it back in...kept turning it back on. Incredible.

No, I kept replacing the mother board and CD Rom drive. Only then was I able to plug it back in and turn it on.

Dell is the Fisher Price of 'puter vendors.

"We have captured the notebook..."

Wow, is it supposed to be hard to capture notebooks? I have two sitting on my desk right now, and they just seem so tame. I didn't know they ran away from people.

...maybe only the violent ones that explode. *shrug*

I would love to have a laptop that would explode if the proper boot-up key were not pressed in time. It might not keep the laptop from getting stolen...but you would have the satisfaction of knowing that the thief was not going to get to use or sell it.

We have used all Dell, all the time here at my employer. Up until about two years ago, my experience was the same as yours. We have about 200 machines, and had maybe two or three hardware failures in a year. The reliability of the latest machines has become noticeably worse, though. Except for the servers, we see two or three failures a month now. We switched to HP.

All kidding aside, there's a lot of energy stored in the battery of a laptop. As they get smaller, but the batteries store as much or more energy, it's sort of like having a hand grenade on your desk. Short out the battery and it may very well go boom.

But then that tank full of volatile organics, you carry around with you when you drive isn't exactly inflammable either.

Hmm, as I recall, Dell had issued warnings about laptop batteries in '03 or '04 when I had my Inspiron. It didn't blow up, but it did crash before it could go on the lam like the one they captured.

As an experienced computer network engineer and "former" PC tech, I respectfully disagree. Dell servers are quite robust.
