Radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh is joking about his police detainment at the airport yesterday for carrying Viagra in his luggage.
"I've been racking my brain. I'm trying to figure out how Bob Dole's luggage got on my airplane," Limbaugh clowned as he opened his national program today. "I told the doctor, I said, 'Look, I'm worried about the next election, not ... .' A misunderstanding. Now, things are what they are."
Former Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas is well-known for his use and endorsement of Viagra, a male sexual-enhancement drug.
The host then changed subjects to discuss his visit Friday to the White House, but later opened his second hour with more jokes.
"The people at Customs were as nice as they could be. They just didn't believe me when I told them that I got those pills at the Clinton Library gift shop, and they told me at the Clinton Library gift shop that it was just blue M&Ms. ... I know a lot of people who don't even need Viagra. [They] just look at themselves in the mirror and the problem's taken -- many of them in Washington, many of them Republicans, too."
Limbaugh was held up for more than three hours at Palm Beach International Airport after authorities found a bottle of pills in his possession prescribed to someone else.
"The problem was that on the bottle itself was not his name, but the name of two Florida doctors," Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokesman Paul Miller told the Associated Press. "He said he had the Viagra in his possession for his use and that he did obtain it from his doctors."
Investigators confiscated the pills, and Limbaugh was released without being charged, though the sheriff's office plans to file a report with the state attorney's office.
"We believe there may be a second degree misdemeanor violation, which is possession of certain drugs without a prescription, because the bottle does not have his name on it," Miller, a former FBI agent, said.
Roy Black, Limbaugh's attorney, issued a statement noting a doctor had prescribed the drug, but it was "labeled as being issued to the physician rather than Mr. Limbaugh for privacy purposes."
In April, Limbaugh and the Florida state attorney, Democrat Barry Krischer, reached a settlement in a long-running prescription-drug investigation of the conservative radio giant, who termed the matter a political witch hunt as well as a "fishing expedition" by prosecutors.
Under the agreement, a single charge of doctor shopping was to be dismissed in 18 months if Limbaugh continues to seek treatment from the doctor he has seen for the past two and a half years for back pain.
"Mr. Limbaugh and I have maintained from the start that there was no doctor shopping," said Black at the time, "and we continue to hold this position. Accordingly, we filed today with the Court a plea of 'Not Guilty' to the charge filed by the State.
"As part of this agreement, Mr. Limbaugh also has agreed to make a $30,000 payment to the state of Florida to defray the public cost of the investigation. The agreement also provides that he must refrain from violating the law during this 18 months, must pay $30 per month for the cost of 'supervision' and comply with other similar provisions of the agreement.
"Mr. Limbaugh had intended to remain in treatment. Thus, we believe the outcome for him personally will be much as if he had fought the charge and won."
Attitudes like that are responsible for keeping a lot of folks home on Sunday.
"It's not mine baby! Honest! I don't know how that got into my bag! Me mojo's working just fine! Really!"
This is silly, why would Rush even bother going to the airport. Why doesn't he just use private strips? I'm sure he has plenty of cash to buy one, and shoot the bird at security, traffic, congestion, lines, taking your shoes off, ect..
He's beating off the ladies with both hands.
I am certain that Rush, armed with a bottle of Viagra and being the paragon of virtue, went to Dominican Republic for reasons other than to have easy access to nubile sex-workers.
That's the truth. When I travel, I "never" take along my actual prescription bottles, just enough for the days of the trip of each prescription I take in a set of "by the day" dispensers. I guess if customs ever searches my luggage, I'll be in "deep doodoo" as well.
You can be sure that if this had been a liberal instead of Rush, the Left would be screaming bloody murder.
From every media outlet we'd be hearing of the "unprecedented invasion of privacy" committed by the Bush administration. The ACLU would have already filed a lawsuit.
See post 47.
What's the big deal over Viagra? I even tried it once. It got stuck in my throat and all I got was a stiff neck out of it. :)
Not every conservative is as perfect as you think you are.
Wow, the prescription drugs may have fried more than Rush's hearing.
Check out Muse as well. Used to see a lot of both being filled, but with the advent of all the others, we don't see scripts for either of them very much any more.
Right! Sure! I say he goes to jail, NOW! How do we know, he REALLY has ED, what if he was just trying to use it for fun! Then,....then...we could make him register as a sex offender....yeah thats the ticket!
I don't think the US Air Force would allow private planes to fly into American airspace from a foreign country. I'm thinking that if he tried he just might be blown the hell out of the sky.
I disagree. I've heard Rush tell people over and over he does not want to be this all moral representitive for the Republicans. He is human justlike the rest of us. Conservatism politcally can mean lots of things, it has nothing to do with whether you go to church, are married,etc..
Personally, if Rush wants to take Viagra than good for him. My 62 year old father takes it and I think it is fine and he is a conservative. So what if Rush is divorced. He may be in a tight relationship right now for all we know, it isn't our business and he doesn't preach that he is the perfect moral man, so who are we to judge?
"It is illegal to travel with prescription drugs without the bottle they came in in this country."
Funny, I can't remember the section of federal law that applies there. Care to educate me on the section that states that very thing?
I travel all the time without my prescriptions in their original bottles. So please tell me which section of US Code I am violating.
"It is illegal to travel with prescription drugs without the bottle they came in in this country."
Really? I do it all the time. I keep a small supply of several prescriptions in a single vial.
He should try natural male enhancement: Smilin' Rush?
well, his website had a photo of him planting a big ol'
"Freedom Kiss" on some babe at a conference....
Honestly, Rush, why don't you just move the heck out of Palm Beach County? Millions of other Americans would love to have you as a neighbor, and they won't send the local DA rummaging thru every aspect of your life.
