Rather was out to tarnish if not destroy Bush the father and Bush the son at all costs. As a liberal Texan (thank goodness a dying breed), he could not abide the Bushes as the state's WH occupants post-LBJ. Ironically, though his arrogance and plain patently stupid antics, Rather is the Texan we are ashamed to say hails from that state.

It was that very zest for power -- in this case, a story that would have destroyed the re-election hopes of President George W. Bush -- that backfired and cost Rather his career.

Brent is way off here - - the big "scoop" was a story that George W. Bush may have failed to take a physical for his National Guard unit in 1972. It staggers the mind that Rather, Mapes, and CBS destroyed themselves trying to "prove" this triviality.
