Acclaimed British physicist Stephen Hawking has said that humanity is finally getting close to understanding the origin of the universe.
Speaking at a lecture in Hong Kong, Hawking said that despite some theoretical advances in the past years, there are still mysteries as to how the universe began.
"Despite having had some great successes, not everything is solved. We do not yet have good theoretical understanding of the observation of the expansion of the universe," he told an audience of 2,500 at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Thursday.
"Without such understanding, we cannot be sure of the future of the universe.
"New observational results and theoretical advances are coming in rapidly; cosmology is a very exciting subject. We are getting close to answering these old questions: why are we here, where did we come from?"
The 64-year-old also said his unfulfilled ambitions, among many, were to find out what happens inside black holes, how the universe began and how the human race can survive in the next 100 years.
Above all, he joked, he wants to understand women.
On Tuesday Hawking said the human race should reach for the stars to survive as the Earth is at risk of being wiped out by a disaster.
He believes humans should settle in space, predicting a lunar settlement within 20 years and a Martian colony in 40.
Hawking, a Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, speaks with a voice synthesiser and has been in a wheelchair since developing motor neurone disease.
During his Hong Kong visit he also revealed he is writing a children's book with his daughter about theoretical physics.
Hawking is the author of international best seller "A Brief History of Time", which attempted to explain a range of subjects in cosmology, including the Big Bang, black holes, light cones and superstring theory.
He is on a six-day visit to Hong Kong and will meet Chief Executive Donald Tsang Friday before heading to Beijing Saturday where he will give a lecture on string theory.
BWAAHAHAHAHAHHAA
Not the crazy zealot...NOOOOO!
Margaret is a GOD WARRIOR & she will kick your butt & scream until you believe.
we already know: "In the beginning GOD...."
Prove it to me, than. I never said I do or don't beleive, btw, just want you to back up your assertions. What makes the new testamentmore valid than the old, or the Koran, or the Westboro Baptist Church's interpretation?
I beleive in the Artesians, and having drilled several miles worth of holes into the ground, can prove to myself they exist, but others may not beleive until I can prove it. Sure, i wrote abook that came to me as dreams from the leader of the Artesians, direct from the source. People call me a nutball for it. Why am I different from anyone who follows any specified religion, just because some dude in a white robe says it's cool and people have killed in the name of their religion for millenia?
Carl Sagan was a professor at Cornell (Ivy League) in astro physics. His wife and co-author has similar credentials. What is wrong with science or "scientific community"? Can't we all get along? You should read Dan Brown's Deception Point and Angels and Demons (reconciles science and religion...maybe.)
WHOA NELLY!!!!
Smoke on dees.
Glenn Beck will interview "Dr. Hawking" on his radio show tomorrow.

I don't have to. There's enough out there already doing that. If you're serious, you'll find out. All I have to do is make sure you know it's there. You go from there -- on your own. You're responsible for your own actions.
You *know* now. It's up to you...

"And can't you atheist types avoid *spamming our lives and living existence* with anti-God quotes and statements?"
Perfect example here. Who forced you to read this thread? You obviously don't believe that the science of cosmology has anything to tell us. I don't come on religion threads (or into chruch or prayer meetings, etc) to tell people that they are all, in my opinion, suffering from a delusion. So why do you and your type feel compelled to come onto threads like this spamming them with bible quotes that have zero relevance to the discussions of SCIENCE at hand? Any do you think all non-believers should be muzzled and their blasphemous and heretical views never heard in public? You sound like one of those fanatical Muslims, except for the particular religion you push. Fortunately your type doesn't seem to be too common in this part of the world.
Get bent,
YYZ
You're an excellent example of why not to read the bible.
Have you read my book of proof on the Artesians? It's out there (waaay out there) and is all the proof necessary they exist, too. You just need to go find it on your own.
Have a really groovy day!
Looks like the "Me N' God R' Gonna Kick Yer Heathen Butt!" contingent is out in full force today. ;)
You said -- "Perfect example here. Who forced you to read this thread?"
And who forced you to read my comments?
