By PATRICK QUINN

BAGHDAD, Iraq Jun 8, 2006 (AP)— Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaida-linked militant who led a bloody campaign of suicide bombings, kidnappings and hostage beheadings in Iraq, has been killed in a U.S. air raid north of Baghdad, Iraq's prime minister said Thursday.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said al-Zarqawi was killed Wednesday evening along with seven aides.

In this case, the President was officially informed at 9:20 ET last night that they had confirmed Z's death. As early as 5 or 6 yesterday afternoon he had been told that they had good reason to believe the monster was dead, but were awaiting absolute confirmation.

So the President did not have to be awakened in the middle of the night. He knew way before the rest of us.

Generally speaking, if something does come up in the middle of the night, the National Security Advisor takes the call if it is a security matter. Don't know who takes it if a domestic crisis...probably the Chief of Staff. Then they decide whether the situation is so pressing that the President has to be awakened from sleep.

If I remember correctly hadn't the F.B.I. investigated Nick Berg? Before the war because his cell phone was used by a suspected terrorist in Oklahoma?

32 "They had to kill him. They couldn't ban gay people.
They had to do SOMETHING" is a classic!

If I'd never read DU, I wouldn't believe it was possible for a person to be that hateful yet that dense.

From SOI:

Snip:

The most important point in all this was from a blog I read just yesterday (I think one of the milblogs, which I cannot seem to relocate, my apologies to the prescient blogger) stating that al Zarqawi had outlived his usefulness to Al Qaeda and would end up dead fairly soon. The blogger noted that he would either become a martyr for the cause or the subject of a western atrocity, either version would galvanize the populace against the west. Since news reports are that the Iraqis turned him over, I’m not sure that sends a message of martyrdom - it tells me that the people did not believe in him or his cause and that maybe the western approach to making their lives better is working. The way the news was released could be controlling these messages in order to remove any unifying effect from al Zarqawi’s death.

How about that LT who is refusing to go to Iraq? Watada, or something. His name doesn't really matter; he will be forgotten before he even gets to prison.
