Russian diplomat 'killed in Iraq'

One Russian diplomat has been killed and four kidnapped in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, Iraqi interior ministry officials say.

The gunmen used three cars to block a road then opened fire on the Russian diplomatic vehicle, the officials say.

The attack took place in Mansour district in the west of the city, close to the Russian embassy.

An embassy official confirmed the death and abductions to Russia's Interfax agency but made no further comment.

Russia's foreign ministry in Moscow would only say it was still checking the information.

Mansour houses a number of embassies and has seen attacks on other diplomats.

A United Arab Emirates diplomat was seized and held for two weeks before being freed last month.

Last year, two Algerian, one Egyptian and two Moroccan embassy workers were abducted and killed.

Severed heads

The latest abductions came on another day of violence across the country.

Iraqi police said they had found eight severed heads on a roadside near the town of Baquba, 60km (35 miles) north-east of Baghdad.

The identities have not been confirmed but a note at the scene said at least one had been killed in retaliation for the murder of four Shia doctors.

Police told the Reuters news agency one of the men was identified as the Sunni preacher of a mosque in Tarmiya, 30km north of Baghdad.

And a police lieutenant-colonel, Adil Zihari, told Associated Press five of the men worked at a hospital in Baghdad.

Separately, seven policemen were killed and 10 other people wounded in an attack on a checkpoint in Baquba.

Insurgents raided the al-Razi checkpoint with rocket-propelled and hand grenades and small arms fire.

In other violence, at least four bodies were found across Baghdad, all with signs of torture.

The violence comes as the new government of Prime Minister Nouri Maliki prepares to name the new interior and defence ministers - a move the administration hopes will help ease unrest.

Russia still has teeth. The question is, which side are they on?

Back in the 80's, 4 Soviet Embassy employees were kidnapped in Beirut by Hezbollah (I think). The word went out that KGB was coming to find them and the 4 were returned. Afterwards, the Sword and Shield went on a tear in Beirut and rounded up everyone even remotley connected to the kidnapping and killed them. The Sovs were never bothered again. 1985, I think..

Rumor was that the KGB nabbed a couple of the local jihadists, cut their privates off, put the trimmings in their mouths and took the bodies to a local extremist hive for viewing.

The word went out that KGB was coming to find them...

That's true.

The KGB captured relatives of the kidnappers and started by sending the, um, sexual body parts to the kidnappers with demands for immediate relase or more parts would be forthcoming - including theirs. The hostages were released immediately. The Soviets never had a bit of trouble again.

Of course, when we had our CIA Station Chief Buckley kidnapped, we wrung our hands and dithered. Hezbollah simply laughed and tortured him to death. The perpetrator is still running around free (Ahmed Muganiyeh, if I recall correctly).

You've got to hand it to the Soviets. They knew how to play that game.

Remember Buckley? Right around the same time as the Sovs were snatched, Buckley, a CIA station chief from Beirut, was snatched. Somehow, the Jihadists knew who he was. They skinned him alive, and its rumored the skin was sent to the US. I have no proof of that. Nevertheless, under torture, he told all. Those Jihadists were never caught. Why? FBI sent HRT in, who were locked an loaded. The Israelis were going to pinpoint the buttwipes holding Buckley, but never did. It was feared that the Israelis would have lost a high placed mole, if they gave the info to the US. Im sure the desicion wasnt made lightly. America had bad luck in Lebanon in the 80s..

Wow, I never knew the name of the Buckley kidnapper. Ostrowski's book (taken with a grain of salt)detailed the Israeli refusal to give the info of his whereabouts. Refusal is probably a harsh word, the Israelis have to live there, we dont. Still, based on who Buckley was, he saw EVERYTHING that went through the Station. How much of that info do you think the Soviets saw? All of it, Im sure..

It might be a signal to the Russians from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard not to give in to the US on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Bush's renouncing the tough talk and wallowing in Abu Ghraib signals a flagging will-Diana West)

Wallowing in Abuf Gharib? That possible the dimmest statement every made by any supposed "expert" I have ever heard. Diana is another screaming Know Nothing who is totally clueless but screams endlessly, I presume?

The excuse the gutless ninnies in the EU were using to hem and haw over Iran was "Bush's reckless Cowboy rhetoric. He merely made some completely meaningless statements that were interpreted as "Bush softening his position" and the result is 6 Nation talks with Iran rather then the US stuck trying to manage Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq largely by itself.

I know the Hollywood movies don't teach the Perpetual Screamers this, but being President is not like being God. To get people to go along with him the President often has to make compromises. The trick is to make cosmetic "Compromises" while keeping your eye on the ball. Reagan understood this, too bas so many of his self proclaimed "Reagan Conservatives" do not.

Dear Diana West, Screaming stupidity loudly does NOT magical change it into wisdom. Sit down and shut up. You are making a fool of yourself with this rabid unthinking hate for President Bush. Your latest column sounds just like a Moveon.org leftist totally mindless ranting. Fairly obvious you have NO clue about International Relations nor about US National Security.

The biggest fear the Russians have is the Chechens who have already attacked innocent civilians throughout Russia multiple times with deadly results. Worse for the Russians is the fact that the Chechens can and will more than likely access a black market nuke some time in the future.

There was not hezballah - they were Arafat's PLO. At a time Syrians, sponsored by Russians, were pummeling PLO camps, Tel-Zaatar namely, where they killed all male populace and forced pal females and children to leave the camp stepping on the dead bodies on the way out.

PLO captured a few guys from the KGB station in Beirut and blackmailed Russians to stop Syrians. Negotiations progressed slowly and PLO cut the head of one of the captives and presented it to Russians in hopes to accelerate an agreement.

Then KGB sent an assassin crew to Beirut, they captured several sheiks, related to PLO, and decapitated one of them.

After that Russian captives were released without any conditions. Syria overran Lebanon and PLO camps.

Maybe retribution killings for enabling Saddam's regime for so long? Are French killings next?

My translation:
Russia evacuated Iraq's WMD and now Al-Qaeda wants them back and they aren't afraid to send Russia a little message pointing this out.

Please let them do what we want (and should) do...

Kill 10 insurgents for every kidnapee, then parade the bodies in troughs of pig entrails (please make the heads clearly visible in the mess).

Make it clear that every time someone gets killed the enemy will be buried in pig's blood!

Seems to me that's more like 'murdered,' and less like 'killed.'
