Back in the 80's, 4 Soviet Embassy employees were kidnapped in Beirut by Hezbollah (I think). The word went out that KGB was coming to find them and the 4 were returned. Afterwards, the Sword and Shield went on a tear in Beirut and rounded up everyone even remotley connected to the kidnapping and killed them. The Sovs were never bothered again. 1985, I think..

Rumor was that the KGB nabbed a couple of the local jihadists, cut their privates off, put the trimmings in their mouths and took the bodies to a local extremist hive for viewing.

The word went out that KGB was coming to find them...

That's true.

The KGB captured relatives of the kidnappers and started by sending the, um, sexual body parts to the kidnappers with demands for immediate relase or more parts would be forthcoming - including theirs. The hostages were released immediately. The Soviets never had a bit of trouble again.

Of course, when we had our CIA Station Chief Buckley kidnapped, we wrung our hands and dithered. Hezbollah simply laughed and tortured him to death. The perpetrator is still running around free (Ahmed Muganiyeh, if I recall correctly).

You've got to hand it to the Soviets. They knew how to play that game.

The biggest fear the Russians have is the Chechens who have already attacked innocent civilians throughout Russia multiple times with deadly results. Worse for the Russians is the fact that the Chechens can and will more than likely access a black market nuke some time in the future.

There was not hezballah - they were Arafat's PLO. At a time Syrians, sponsored by Russians, were pummeling PLO camps, Tel-Zaatar namely, where they killed all male populace and forced pal females and children to leave the camp stepping on the dead bodies on the way out.

PLO captured a few guys from the KGB station in Beirut and blackmailed Russians to stop Syrians. Negotiations progressed slowly and PLO cut the head of one of the captives and presented it to Russians in hopes to accelerate an agreement.

Then KGB sent an assassin crew to Beirut, they captured several sheiks, related to PLO, and decapitated one of them.

After that Russian captives were released without any conditions. Syria overran Lebanon and PLO camps.

I wouldn't be suprised if Russian Spetnaz and SVR shows up in Iraq and deals with the terrorists that attacked the convoy. Also, the terrorist groups in Iraq that take aid from Rusia will assist the Russians with this.
