Couric Compares Male Anchors To 'Ted Baxter'
POSTED: 11:57 am EDT June 2, 2006 UPDATED: 12:12 pm EDT June 2, 2006
In her first appearance at CBS, former NBC personality Katie Couric took some shots at "pretentious" male network anchors - and the "Today Show."
Couric appeared at a convention of CBS affiliated stations in Las Vegas in Thursday.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Couric said evening news audiences "don't want a mechanical Ted Baxter," referring to Ted Knight's stuffy character on the "Mary Tyler Moore Show." "People want a multidimensional (news anchor) and not someone they can put in a box."
The Reporter also said that Couric said the "pretentious era" of evening-news anchors was going to end.
Among the current and past news anchors possibly alluded to by Couric are ABC's Peter Jennings and Bob Woodruff, NBC's Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw, and CBS's Bob Schieffer and Dan Rather.
Next week, respected newsman Charles Gibson takes over as ABC's solo evening anchor as Woodruff recovers from wounds suffered in Iraq.
In the same interview session with Lesley Stahl, Couric said "as much as I love doing 'Today,' there's only so much I could do -- only so many interviews about hormone-replacement therapy and so many fashion shows."

It's just the 'perky-one's' way of saying that she's ALL THAT! (Insert Zorro Z-snap courtesy of the Wayans brothers)
Actually, I think she may have a point. I have often compared local anchors (and national) to good old Ted Baxter. The pompous cluelessness is dead on in most cases.
She reminds me of Sue Ann ( I think that was her name. Super Air-head.

hasn't realized that the network news is a quaint antique, like a little insignificant Victorian teacup, with a chip.
He, heh. I think Couric is going to provide a lot of material for FR over the next few years.
One can only hope her head continues to swell until it bursts like a rancid watermelon left out in the sun too long.
She's also the one who made a joke about castrating men on the Today show one time.
Women want someone with nice shoes, styled hair and boutique stylings to read them the news with a smile. Men want a news ticker, great looking women with cleavage saying nothing in particular, with lots of pictures of the local and national sports teams. Kinda like Free Republic with bosoms and a PIP game going at the same time, now that is news.
So sayeth the Queen of Pretentious.
When that day comes, she'll be the first one out of a job.
The air-head was Georgette, Sue Ann was *The Happy Homemaker*, the one with the hots for Lou.
Give her a year behind the desk and it will be wily old Bob Scheiffer who will be laughing since he sat in the same chair as Rather and Couric and sustained better ratings than either of one of the poster children for the limousine liberal crowd.
As far as being a network anchor is concerned, she is a complete newbie.
I didn't care for Rather and Cronkite and Jennings and Brokaw (Brinkley and Reynolds were better), but at least those guys achieved some level of success as an anchor. KC has achieved NOTHING as an anchor.
My guess is that with these comments KC has already alienated many of the people at CBS News. Nice job, KC. Making enemies as you enter a new company is classic stupidity.
She won't last long in this gig.

Baxter was a brainless self-important news-reader. How were Rather, Jennings, Brokaw (or Couric) any different?
I resent that remark.

CBS must be soooo proud ...
