Mel Gibson Slams Da Vinci Code

Monday, May 22, 2006 12:44 a.m. EDT Mel Gibson Slams 'Da Vinci Code'

Catholic actor Mel Gibson has slammed "The Da Vinci Code" book and movie for attacking the beliefs that he holds sacred, World Entertainment Network reported.

"The Passion of the Christ" star has been outraged about the thriller's controversial plot concerning Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. [Editor's Note: Get NewsMax's special report "The Da Vinci Con" FREE with Ann Coulter's book, "Godless" – CLICK HERE NOW!]

Gibson says, "What worries me is that people will take this as fact.

"I'm not angry, per se, that it refutes everything I hold sacred, the foundations of my beliefs. The Da Vinci Code is an admitted work of fiction but it cleverly weaves fact into maverick theories in a way that will appear plausible to some."

The angry star was actually the first choice of Dr. Robert Lomas (the intellectual who inspired the Robert Langdon character) to play him. Tom Hanks plays Langdon in the film

A friend of mine saw it and said it's a fictionalized mystery.

If people have a need of fictionalized mystery, there are many other movies to give that pleasure. I don't think that is the reason people go to this movie or read the book.

What people want is an atmosphere of lies and deceit and murder by chuch authorities. Throw in the heretical idea that Christ married and had a child, and you have a recipe for what people really want.

No, fair play is having respect for others and their beliefs, as they do for yours.

We certainly don't want taunting between cultures.

Cartoons of Condi, looking like a crow, are beyond the pale and meant to insult her personally. Cartoons, of Mullahs with towel bombs, are truthfully to the point in describing what the Islamics are about.

Cartoon's can lie, but so can pundits.

A friend of the church, no doubt.

The cartoons are not at the lowest level, in that they are true.

They assert that Islamists want to bomb their way to domination.

I have no friend but His truth. The Church has long been an antagonist of the truth.

Beauseant!

I saw The DC today. Yes, I broke my no more movies vow. I thought the movie, not referring to the subject matter, rather the mechanics/cinematography, was horrid. A very poorly directed, filmed, acted, and staged movie. Since I am not Catholic, and did not read the book, much of the references was foreign to me, so I saw the movie as purely a work of fiction with no religious overtones. Not worth the trip to the theater.

"...admitted work of fiction but it cleverly weaves fact into maverick theories in a way that will appear plausible to some."

It's the Michael Moore approach to movie making. The line between documentary and fiction becomes blurred. That's not what's important, though. What really matters is that viewers leave the theater with a mind full of doubts.

Speaking as someone who so far can only dream of even a single million , I would rather have the money now and not worry too much about what God might have to say about it at some point in the future.....

That's your perogative. Like the rich, young man in Scripture, it's obvious who you have chosen to serve.

I know this is a conservative forum and the folks here hate the Da Vinci Code ...... but the movie just made over $225 billion worldwide in its first weekend........a record.

I don't hate the movie. It's a work of fiction and should be treated as such. That said, your off by about 224 BILLION on your estimate Noob.

His truth, of course, is what he says it is, and he was "there." right?

"Even the WAY your kind tells us we should not be offended is offensive."

I'm a Christian too, but I don't think you even know what a Christian is, in the sense that you think you're the only kind out there. You can spout off about movies all you want, but I really don't think Jesus cares what you think of the Da Vinci code.

But the thing is, you (and by "you" I mean any particular individual or group) don't get to decide which portrayals are true and which are insults. And anyway, you have no right to not be offended.

All that means is that there's still a market for anti-Catholic bigotry. It is the last acceptable prejudice, after all.

Personally, I find it comforting when the world does exactly what Christ predicted it would 2000 years ago. The Prince of this World continues to rule here. And the followers of Jesus are hated.

Donning asbestos now..

I guess no one thought it was worth the effort to reply to a fake Catholic.

No real Catholic would fail to be offended.

...or even being there at the death, removal from the cross, or even at the Tomb to take care of the body... a wifely duty.

On the other hand, who was the person who first saw Jesus after the resurrection? And what was that person doing at the Tomb so early on a Sunday morning?

No reason to insult me. My faith is strong enough to see it for what it is.

Wrong ! I taught my kids right from wrong, and in helping the legislature write laws, and with a non activist court, we enforce 'right and wrong', and now sadly, even 'verbal restictions', contrary to our FF's.

You may perceive it as merely a mediocre attempt at fiction.

However, you should be offended -- even aghast -- that even one less discerning viewer out there might take it to be truthful, or even to have doubt created in his mind.

This would offend Jesus, and should offend you.

The Church has survived worse and will continue to survive. Honest and reasonable people wont be swayed, and those that are were never going to or never will embrace the Church..
