ELMIRA, N.Y. -- As "New York, New York" so famously promises, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere. Hillary Rodham Clinton may soon put those lyrics to a presidential test.
With little question that she will win re-election to the Senate this fall, a larger question looms: If Clinton turned numbers of skeptical and sometimes openly hostile upstate New Yorkers significantly in her favor, could she pull off the same thing nationally in a 2008 run for the White House?
Seven years ago, when she began her Senate campaign, many residents of this hard-pressed Finger Lakes region considered Clinton the political equivalent of the Wicked Witch of the West. Older women, particularly, acidly criticized her as domineering, arrogant, ambitious and oblivious to blue-collar concerns--not to mention unable to rein in her philandering husband.
During her first term as the state's junior U.S. senator, Clinton hardly has morphed into Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. But the Democrat has shed much of her image as a broom-riding carpetbagger and gained more than a little respect and appreciation in some of the most conservative corners of the state.

I can not embrace her with both middle fingers already extended.
Ditto from another New Yorker.
The Opposition has always underestimated the Clintons's ability to mount a campaign.
Yeah, that's what i wanna do.
No, really.
Will the rest of the country if she runs for president?
Rudy's gift to us!
Someone said it right today. If she was smart, she'd stay as a Senator for 20 years and be happy.
I have to say this.
In 2000, Hillary came to our jobsite in Manhattan.
I was an engineer with my firm at the time.
I was standing in line with my superiors.
She proceeded to shake everyone's hand.
When she walked in front on me, she extended her hand.
I shook it.
Her Royal Thighness flanked by Secret Service.
In a previous instance I got to shake hands with Rudy Giuliani when he was Mayor.
It truly is a small world.
She has no idea how everyone she met that day truly detested her and would never vote for her.
By the way, I used rubbing alcohol on my hand three times before touching anything.
She is about as embraceable as a virus.
No matter how many schills in the press, no matter how many reliable pundits, there will come a time when Hitlery must stand at a podium, answer questions from an audience, and spend a year pressing flesh with the great unwashed.
Unlike her affable and charming husband, Hitlery doesn't have what it takes to put up with that for a month, let alone for the length of a presidential campaign.
And her Rat comrades know it.
She does not have a chance in hell of being elected, or even nominated.
She could if enough people think like my idiot neighbor.
He told me "..I'd vote for Hillary for president because, unlike Bush, she's an anti-communist!"
Can you believe it?
I guess that mindset (or lack, thereof) explains why Washington State sends such mental giants as Patty (mom in tennis shoes) Murray, Maria Cantwell and Jim McDermott to DC.
That headline should tell ya all you need to know about neworkers.....LMAO
Oh Please. Some in NY have embraced her. The author of this tripe probably never bothered to check with the "hard pressed" Finger Lakes region as to whether we were still hard pressed thanks to Hillary's (not to mention Chuckie's) self-centered politics of "me".
Typing with my foot almost dipped in a Finger Lake (but way too cold fo that today) mere minutes from the famous Ithaca, City of Evil.
And how they would view free stuff from Givernment(national, state, county and local)
If Hillary is nothing; she's very generous with others stuff..
How many?.. thousands?... millions?.. Wonder if the democrat party is aware of the massive voter fraud that could be performed by illegal and legal aliens voting.. Thank God democrats are dumber than republicans or we would be in for some real trouble in 2008... maybe even 2006..
Forgot to add--anyone who actually knows the NYS region also knows Elima is in the Southern Tier of NY and not the Finger Lakes. But Chicago Trib readers would hardly make that geographical distinction as the author tries to get Her Thighness a few more votes.
Her own husband won't embrace her, why should we? Everyone knows Bubba prefers embracing fat interns to Hillaroo.
Hillary finds an embrace...
