The Mexican Perspective
MATT.org ^ | Roberto Morris

While surfing through the web, I ran across a rather vexing headline on a site called badeagle.com; it read: “Mexican Women Beg: Close the Border”. My first impression was of outrage! How dare they support the wall! How dare they support a “roundup” of the hard-working illegals that risk life and limb to support them! I was nauseous. “Bad Mexicans!” I said to myself. Where is their sense of solidarity and brotherhood? Then, I decided to read beyond the headline.

These women are rather spectacular. They are the women of Tecapulco, Guerrero. (Guerrero, although one of the poorest states in Mexico, is curiously enough the state where Acapulco is located, one of the most luxurious beach resorts in the world.) They have survived by banding together and forming a co-op that produces hand-made crafts and jewelry; they compete with global prices, find time to tend to their fields, take care of their children and have even found the energy to participate in a project called Art Camp.

Their case is solid. They want their men back. Wives want their husbands at home. They want fathers for their children, they want help cutting and polishing their jewelry. They need help. They are sick and tired of deadbeat dads who say that they are going to send money back, and never do. They want a functional, loving family. Who could argue with that? After reading this, I was about to fly to Tijuana and place the first brick myself. However, life is rarely that simple.

Curiously enough, my paisanos north of the border have a similar plea. They want to keep their families together. Many of the illegals who would be rounded up and shipped back to Mexico have family in the U.S. Their children are citizens, but they are not. They beg for amnesty or a guest-worker program in order to keep their families together.

Then there is the third case, the men and women who want nothing more than to go back to Mexico and see the families they were forced to leave behind. .......

Are Americans who want to send the illegals back willing to send some jobs back with them? There are still a lot of manufacturing jobs in the US, despite the shrinkage. We could build more International trucks, Chevrolets and VWs in Mexico.

We could make it advantageous to buy that top quality Mexican baby clothing rather than inferior cheap Chinese baby clothing. (My wife's business is Mexican made baby clothing.)

Better to import from Mexico than China?

CL Note the reference to "Bad Mexican". Hope it never comes to that name calling.

I would rather help a pseudo-democracy than a communist state.
I could make a bad joke about how many people could fit in a Mexican car, but I'll refrain.

It is not America's job to send jobs to Mexico. The Mexican government needs to get off it's lazy a$$ and create some econimic stimulation, not to mention getting away from their corrupt ways.

The Mexican people need to stop spending their money, blood and sweat crossing our border, and start their own revolution. If their corrupt government were overthrown, jobs would materialize.

The French did it, for crying out loud. So can the Mexicans.

Then there is the third case, etc...

By annexing Mexico, and eventual statehood for it, these families, at least the Mexican families, can be reunited. At least the ones where the families want to stay together.

Personally, I'd rather have a stable and democratic nation on our southern border. If that means providing well-paying consistent jobs to that nation, so be it. It is in our best interest to improve life in Mexico... a happy democratic neighbor over a socialist one any day.

1. Mexico had a bloody Revolution in the 1910s.

2. France has double digit unemployment and mob violence and/or strikes on a regular basis.

I was thinking more the lines of emulating the Chilean model. There is a reason why you don't see too many Chileans in the U.S. relative to other South Americans.

I think the undiscovered truth in this whole immigration mess is that most of our policies are actually intended to prevent an absolute collapse of Mexican society. NAFTA, the Mexican Bailout, and the current immigration proposals are all centered around keeping Mexico solvent enough that it doesn't meltdown into revolution (and who knows what we might get out of that). We don't need another oil-rich country in the hands of despots. The trick is to reform the corrupt system that's already there, and on that, we've had a real failure.

I've come to agree with the President's view-- you can't deport 12 million illegals, not because we couldn't do it, or because we need these people to trim our hedges, but because dumping that many poor back on the broken system down there would likely break it entirely, and then we would have a quasi-Somalia on our doorstep.

Yes, I think we should look at trying to build up the Mexican lower class in Mexico. But I'm not sure what the solution in the current situation there is.

I am not opposed to anyone in the western hemisphere joining the union. But I would focus on digesting one problem country at a time.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bill O'Reilly was making a major dig on this point in The Factor tonight.

It seems that the Foreign Secretary of Mexico had made comments to the effect that if our National Guard were to arrest illegal Mexican aliens in our country - he would start filing law suits against the U.S.

Mr. O'Reilly responded that if the suits were placed, O'Reilly would call for a ban against Mexican business interests such as tourism and products.

I thought it sounded serious and O'Reilly said if the Mexicans didn't think he was serious - just ask the French.

It is not America's job to send jobs to Mexico.

I thought that NAFTA was supposed to take care of that?????

Let me see if I have this straight?

Quite a number of Mexicans want to forego our immigration laws and feel that they are entitled to walk across the Mexican-USA border and that they are entitled to jobs, welfare, and voting rights? The United Nations views these aliens as 'legitimate migrants'? Our President thinks, because they are human, that they should be welcomed as 'guest workers' even though they broke the law (Title 8 USC) by coming here without passing through an immigration checkpoint? We have a United States Congress who insists on passing more immigration laws even though volumes exist that are not being enforced? Private citizens who have chosen to assist the Border Patrol are called 'vigilantes' by our leaders?

My God, is country screwed up??????????????

Men leaving their children without support? Dead-beat Mexicans!

If Mexicans were so hard working, why is their country still a 3rd world $hithole?

Mexico has nice silver jewelry, ceramics and of course..baby clothes. I used to cross the Border once a month, when I lived In Arizona to buy "stuff"..:)

I have nothing against buying Mexican products. Beats that Chinese resin crap.
