BUSH SET FOR IMMIGRATION SPEECH WHITE HOUSE President Bush is getting set for a prime-time speech on immigration tomorrow night. Aides note the 8 p-m, Eastern Time, speech will be the president's first from the Oval Office that does not involve Iraq and the war on terrorism. And they say that reflects Bush's "passion" on immigration. He's speaking as the Senate is poised to clear a compromise measure including his idea for a guest worker program. However, a rival House bill is limited to a border crackdown, and meshing the two won't be easy. Stand Up For America !

If an amnesty is granted I am going to send a letter to my reps in Congress asking for a list of the laws that I, as a taxpaying, law abiding military vet will be allowed to ignore. I know which one's congress thinks its OK for illegals to ignore... I just want to be treated fairly and be informed about the laws I am now allowed to ignore.

Well right now it is a misdemeanor and there are misdemeanor amnesties all the time. Child support, failure to appear for traffic violations and such. Once the amnesty period lapses then the Cops go on warrant sweeps. If you paid up during that period you are only liable for the fines.

PREDICTION: There will be some gestures and fake moves toward enforcement at the Mexican border. This will be a transparent sop to his conservative critics. The speech will highlight once again GWBush's shamnesty. A path to legal work permits, legal residence, citizenship for our 12-20 million illegal aliens. Vicente Fox will not be disappointed

Once more we will here the lie that it's not amnesty because it's not an automatic path to citizenship.

I was asking about this the other day. I don't quite understand what reducing 4437 to misdemeanors means for this bill? Does it essentally take the "teeth" out of real enforcement? Can anybody comment on this? (Sorry if this has already been talked about)

The illegal aliens already have amnesty from traffic laws and insurance. Do you think the man who flashes his Matricula Consular card saying "Jose Gomez" to the traffic cop will be showing up in court? There are a million Jose Gomez here.

Therein lies the problem... the sweeps against illegals almost never occur. Nor do these poeple pay up. They simply slip into the shadowy cracks of the illegal network, living incognito on farms, in trailor parks and in 'colonias'. There is almost no enforcement at any level when it comes to actual immigration laws. Other misdemeanors, such as shoplifting, etc... are enforced, but the fact remains is that these people are given a pass far more often than the rest of us. I have a problem with that.
