Bush set for immigration speech

BUSH SET FOR IMMIGRATION SPEECH

WHITE HOUSE President Bush is getting set for a prime-time speech on
immigration tomorrow night.

Aides note the 8 p-m, Eastern Time, speech will be the president's first from the Oval Office that does not involve Iraq and the war on terrorism. And they say that reflects Bush's
"passion" on immigration.

He's speaking as the Senate is poised to clear a compromise measure including his idea for a guest worker program. However, a rival House bill is limited to a border crackdown, and meshing the two won't be easy.

Stand Up For America !

"We have room for but one flag, the American flag...
We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...
And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

From one of the articles you posted:

Meanwhile, drug-related bloodshed has accelerated, with some cities seeing killings almost daily.

In April, suspected drug lords posted the heads of two police officers on a wall outside a government building where four drug traffickers died in a Jan. 27 shootout with officers in the Pacific resort of Acapulco.

Coming to a city near us in the next 15 years or so.

I do, too. My BIL is a Deputy Sheriff in OC and his job is in charge of transporting prisoners to court, etc.. it's a nightmare job to keep opposing gang members, drug dealers, etc., all separated and still get everyone where they have to go on time.

From your link to the interview with JIM LEHRER and the AG

ALBERTO GONZALES:

And I believe it's critically important that we have legislation passed this year, because we're really talking about the mass security of this country, and we can't afford to continue to wait and wait just because it's a difficult issue.

snip---

They have to be dealt with compassion, and they are human beings and deserve basic respect. But they have -- they are here illegally, and the president is not advocating amnesty, that they should not suffer some kind of penalty. He is suggesting and recommending that there should be some adverse consequences to the fact that they came here unlawfully.

Absolutely shameful... the AG admits its a security problem and we can't wait... yet they made our security CONTINGENT upon shamnesty.

And then he points out that its not amnesty because there is a penalty attached.. and you and I know there is no real penalty.

Where is his conscience??? Forget the obvious answer, a more pertinent question is where is his heart?? Instead of giving BS interviews like this he should have been addressing the threats from Mexico about law suits regarding the NG and told them to mind their own business!

Senate blocks effort to limit benefits to immigrants

By Donna Smith 10 minutes ago

The U.S. Senate blocked an effort on Thursday to limit Social Security benefits for illegal immigrants who would become permanent residents under a sweeping immigration overhaul being debated by lawmakers.

The Senate immigration bill would give millions of the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the country a path to citizenship as long as they pay a fine and back taxes and meet such requirements as learning English.

The Senate is considering a number of amendments to the bill and was expected to vote later on Thursday on a measure offered by Sen. James Inhofe (news, bio, voting record), an Oklahoma Republican, that would make English the national language.

President George W. Bush backs a comprehensive approach close to what the Senate is considering and traveled to Yuma, Arizona, a front line for illegal crossings from Mexico, to shore up support for his plan to deploy up to 6,000 National Guard troops along the border.

Bush on Thursday formally requested congressional approval for $1.9 billion in emergency funding for his border security initiative.

Mexico said it would complain to Washington about plans to build security fences and deploy the Guard. "There are 12 million Mexicans on the other side, 12 million people who live every day in anguish about the need for a reform to let them live peacefully," Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez said.

The Senate also killed an amendment offered by Sen. John Ensign (news, bio, voting record), a Nevada Republican, that would have prevented immigrants who legalize their status from getting Social Security credit for work while they were illegal.

"Social Security was not intended for people who entered our country illegally," Ensign said.

Bush is flying down to the border today. He's taking Hayworth with him. Nothing like a litte more pressure.

Ugh.

We all need to heave our support behind the good guys in the House; the pressure for "compromise" is intense.
