Just heard at the top of the hour that King Bill is against deployment of any NM Guard members to the border. In a short interview on ABC news, he said the guardsmen were "too tired, they have been fighting forest fires", it is the responsibility of the federal government, not the states.

What a duplicitous SOB after calling for a "state of emergency"; when action is actually to be taken, he backs off and changes his mind. I'm glad the President is actually thinking about calling Bill's bluff.

People aren't posting because they don't want to be drilled and mocked for their opinions anymore.

A great number of people who crossed swords with you and the rest of your harpie bunch aren't posting because they've been banned. The people who may get nailed for supporting open borders don't have to fear permanent banishment. The people who dare criticize the President for his border policies in your presence DO sometimes get banned. Really. Would you like a list?

I would like nothing better than to discuss this issue without name-calling and sloganeering.

For example, I would like to know WHY so many people risk their lives to come to this country. Why is Mexico a basket-case? Why won't they get their act together?

I do not condone illegal immigration, but it would take a hard heart to hate those poor souls who come here just for the oportunity to gut chickens for Tyson. How desperate do you have to be to risk your life for that type of job?

Yeah - let's see your list - I will start:

Travis McGee (banned for advocating civil war).

Your turn.

Williams put up one of the posts with the opinion that catching illegals [crossing the existing border, as I took it] was a good deterrent and a hardened border was therefore not needed.

Anyone who thinks that will work needs to think about how effective it would be if our prisons had no walls and no locking doors.

How does anyone who believes that explain all the illegals in this country now?

There have been dozens of stories about mere rumor causing Illegals to disappear

They don't disappear over the border though. I see your point but I really don't believe you OR the government is going to solve this to any great degree. You have too many local and state governments that like things the way they are. If I were king I would drop the anchor baby nonsense. Cut off all welfare benefits except emergency medical care to both legal and non-legal aliens. If you look at the states with the real problem illegals, those that are on welfare, commit the most crimes and generally cause the most trouble are clustered in states with the most generous welfare benefits with California at the top of the list.

There are 2 things driving illegal immigration work and welfare. I don't mind those that want to work but I have a problem with those that see this country as one big welfare office. If we cut those out of the equation then we could possibly get a handle on the problem.

No, I haven't. It's on my to do list.

But, when I go, I'll also be thinking of a couple of my poor relatives that got turned back, because they were "ill"...sniff, sniff.

But shed no tears for me, I've still got relatives in Italy!

The building of a wall may give some a feeling of security but they can be breached, tunnelled under and compromised. Building it is a noteworthy effort and significant expense. Long term it requires care and maintenence and close monitoring once it is built. This will become more and more demanding as time goes on. The full militarizing of our borders involves much more than is noe being considered. This does not include any mention of the Northern Border.

It makes no sense to build a wall and leave the Northern end wide open. The problem will just shift fro south to north!

I would love to visit Italy. 9/11 sure did put our "to do" lists in a different perspective, didn't it?

I already posted again saying that I have no preference for how they do it and that I'm sure a mix of methods are needed. But prisons are controlled (somewhat) by the guards. It wouldn't work if you just had walls, they would get out. But a wall is ok as long as it works. 2,000 miles is a very long wall.

I will have to go back and check. Those laws were posted today on one of these threads, by a poster whose name began with m. Howlin, Coop, can you help me find them? I have been in and out all day and have lost track. Thanks!

I hope they're bringing tools and materials with them to build a wall.

There are a total of 12,034 km land borders of the United States [Canada 8,893 km (including 2,477 km with Alaska), Mexico 3,141 km]. Don't forget our coastline: 19,924 km either ; )

Well one of the articles posted here did mention some had "gone home" as a result of ICE raid rumors. Point is, they get scarce. If it's tough everywhere, they'll get real scarce.

"drop the anchor baby nonsense. "
Agree.

"Cut off all welfare benefits except emergency medical care to both legal and non-legal aliens."
Agree again.

Now, I'd wager provided the border was secure, most would approve of a guest worker program that allowed only the worker for a specified time.

"You have too many local and state governments that like things the way they are."

I'm sure those voted out in Herndon, Va liked things the way they were too.

Don't make too much about that one little town. It isn't the villages it is the cities.

And that would be so much more of a productive kind of discussion to be having... Of course, as soon as we start talking about Mexico in any way except to criticize it we will quickly be called tools of one world government and the CFR... :(

One sad thing is that the Fox administration was likely the high point of Mexican governance and what comes after will be more liberal with a stronger influence from Venezuela and Cuba. We may well find ourselves like Israel - without a partner for serious talks and forced to act unilaterally.

I sincerely hope the president gives the speech of his career on Monday and that has has the political capital and brings it to bear on this issue decisively. As long as I'm hoping it would be good to get a rational last ditch effort from Fox but I'm afraid he is overwhelmed with corruption and problems and internal politics.

I have yet to see one person call for amnesty.

Holy Cow! Are we going to have that argument?

Everyone who has called for a "guest worker program with a path to citizenship for illegals" has called for amnesty. It's the same thing.

As much as people say they want the illegals to leave this country would not stand for pictures we saw with that Cuban kid multiplied by several million every night. No it really is unreasonable to think that could happen.

Good point. Im fairly certain America doesnt have the stomach to see that scene repeated night after night with a breathless Katie Couric decrying the inhumanity. Busloads of pregnant women and their kids heading for Juarez would be a politcal boon for the Kennedys, Pelosis and Clintons of the world. Now, I know I will now be accused of favoring amnesty, and being pro-illegal, but I know Im not. A round up and mass deportation, regardless of what the Bush haters think, is just not feasible right now. Maybe in the future, but right now we need to stem the tide. Calling W Jorge and saying he favors Mexico over the US is just assinine, as are a majority of the posts on this thread. Cool headed thinking and debate is whats needed, but I am winessing this thread (and pretty much every other thread on FR these days) descend into something resembling my sons first grade class at Walker Elememtary..

Awaitng the inevitable flames and accusations of being pro-guest worker, pro-illegal and all of the nonsensical charges that FR has turned into..
