I'm not sure I understand how it's preferable for one party to sell down the river instead of another party.

I like the way you think. No, I wouldn't bet against it. I'm sorry, but I can't remember if activation orders are signed by the president, the SecDef, or someone lower in the food chain. I don't think the president or SecDef would do something like that (I think they are honorable people, even if they aren't conservative), but someone lower might. It wouldn't be the first time some high ranking, liberal civil servant used their office to try to thwart the will of the people.

Isn't it grand! Yet, amazingly enough HE WON! That's the pattern conservatives need to repeat nationwide!

Sadly, I have to agree. I have seen this over and over and over again.

I was sickened when I saw the same arrogant, condescending, sarcastic, nasty attitude come out of those who were laughing and high-fiving one another while Terri Schiavo was being starved to death. They were ready to dance on her grave it seems. No matter what side of the issue you are on, that is just deplorable.

I know these are old wounds, but it is such an indictment on what you rightly call "the rather sorry side of human nature."

From your post, you sound like you are already doing the right thing to take control of the Republican Party. That's great! However, don't stop fighting if your guy doesn't win. It's all about getting the best deal you can! Ten percent from a RINO is better than nothing. I seriously hope you won't have to vote for the lesser of two evils, but not voting is a useless gesture, ensuring defeat! Think about the results if the Democrats win. Do you really, really want that?

Looks like the NG's may be called up by Bush. This will be a wait and see. If it's a humanatarian aid call up for the summer it will backfire. If it's to secure the borders it can only work until a wall is built and or sufficent border patrol is trained. It would be better actually if Congress sent them their IMO. It would make it very difficult for a federal judge to step in lest he face contempt charges in congress and be impeached for Judical Misconduct.

Good essay, wardaddy, tell it like it is.

I would call it the 'underbelly' of human nature.

It is one thing to be vile, petty and mean and another to do it with such glee.

How does that align with "what we are trying to accomplish here?"

In the past few days, I have had the last of the wool pulled from over my eyes.

I sadly see that what people were telling me is true.

Is it a fact, as FReeper 'winker' says, there is no longer any venue where a patriotic American can speak their mind?

When I joined up nearly 2 years ago, the discourse here was at a level worthy of citizens who call themselves conservatives.

Some, like Just Piper, have continued to conduct themselves with dignity and purpose; and some, like joanie-f, with passion and clarity.

Citizens who think for themselves and speak up bravely are far more valuable to our Republic than those who are an endless echo chamber of talking points.

Wonder Warthog wrote: "So precisely what's "irrational" about insisting that our laws be obeyed??"

He's using a logic trap on you, Warthog. I think it's called a faulty dilemma. I might have the name wrong, but it essentially boils down to giving you only two choices without presenting a middle ground. Just because you want the laws enforced doesn't mean every single illegal must be rounded up and deported. That would be logistically very, very difficult to say the least. But he doesn't give you any other choice than surrender (amnesty). That ignores a variety of middle options. For example, better enforcement, like fines on employers, could have an impact by reducing the jobs available for illegals.

I always love the argument that a wall is hopeless because it can't stop 100%. Well, if we had to have 100% success before doing something, we'd never do anything.

I agree Free Republic has its share of apologists for GW and the RINOs, but I think your characterization of the moderators and Jim Robinson is totally unfair! Read some of my past posts, and you'll see I've been very critical of GW for several years--yet, I'm not banned (yet).

The way I see it, we have a pretty open forum here to debate the issues. Just because we FReepers disagree on certain points, we all need to come together and do what's best for this country BEFORE election time. That doesn't mean all dissent should be squashed, and I don't believe it is. It only means we need to remember we are essentially on the same side here.

I've noticed in the past week or so an increase in the number of posters frustrated with the constant bickering.

Maybe there's hope of moving to the point where every thread doesn't become a food fight between the "bots" and the "unappeasables."

For example ... I enjoy spending time on ConfirmThem.com ... and while there are certainly disagreements there, the threads are intelligent and rarely devolve into an exchange of insults.

Of course, that site has only a tiny fraction of the posters that FR has ... so part of the problem here is the price of success.

(Oh, for what it's worth, there is a rumor at ConfirmThem that there may be a Supreme Court retirement as early as today.)

I'd thank them for their contribution and then deport them.

True. Some posters resort to personal attacks rather than respectfully stating their positions. I hope we can elevate the discussions to a higher level, keeping the posts both constructive and polite.

Also, what would you do to the illegal alien parents of three U.S. citizens - their oldest is a doctor, their middle child is 2 years into West Point, and the youngest is set to graduate as valedictorian for high school this June?

What would you do if this family had broken into your home and refused to leave for years?

Well he absolutely took on what most considered to be a more popular candidate in the Primary.

He then beat a very popular and polished Democrat.

"No - the Captain would get an "F" - but your analogy works only if 24 million illegal aliens all came in during Bush's watch."

WRONG. The anaology works (no analogy is perfect) because there is a lag between input, the response, the inadequacy of the response and the future result.

Bush is "captain" now. There is a problem now, that will mature in the near future.

Beyond that there CANNOT in a just nation be TWO ways to get into the country, one legal and ardous and the other illegal and easy.

Beyond even that: They promised me the first time in '86 that "this would be it" on amnesty. Now I will accept NOTHING but justice from here on in--and I don't care how the hell hard it is to do.

As far as "hard stats": it is a pretty damn stupid question in that ILLEGAL types aren't going check the box as they pass the immigration official. I want LEGAL citizens ONLY--no ILLEGAL!
