Senate leaders reached an agreement yesterday on immigration reform legislation that would strengthen border security but also would allow millions of illegal aliens who have been in the U.S. for two years or longer to apply for citizenship. Derided by conservatives as "amnesty," the proposal could be amended but senators on both sides of the aisle say they doubt it will be dramatically altered. "Senate Republicans are united in their commitment to an open and full debate on multiple amendments," said a statement from seven Republicans who represent the full spectrum of positions on immigration reform. "We are willing to put differences aside so we can get on with the important work to be done securing our borders and grappling with the 12 million illegal immigrants currently living in our country," said the group that included Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas. "We are also in agreement that efforts to curtail the debate prematurely will only derail this process. We call on Senate Democrats to allow an open debate and votes on this complex and challenging issue," the statement read. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, with whom Mr. Frist has been negotiating for weeks, said he "welcomed" the return of the thorny bill to the floor.

I don't know how many people saw Lou Dobbs yesterday, but he is absolutely about to explode over the illegal alien issue. He seems to be one of the few people who make any sense these days.

By the way, not matter how you cut it, it's amnesty. And what cracks me up is that this bill offers amnesty (shortcut to "citizenship") to those illegal aliens who have been criminals, ie. illegal aliens, the longest.
Sooner or later this was going to happen. The Dems have been trying to get "just in time for the elections" for a long time. Didn't Bubba grant auto citizenship to thousands at a crack before the 1996 election? I thought it was in Florida??
Here we go.....tip-toeing through the tulips again. Or is it going to be the Mexican Hat Dance again? ;.)
The only hope left is that the House won't fold. I'm not optimistic.

It's not amnesty, it's Mexican amnesty. We need to start using the correct terminology. 80% of the illegals are Mexican.
Maybe the Congress is jealous that another Republican in Ohio, Taft, was able to do the near impossible and get into the single digits of approval. They want to prove that no state RINO can outdo the national RINO's? They are aiming for approval in the nagatives I take it? They are sure doing a hell of a job making that reality. :-)

I'm so comforted I'm not only not contributing funds, walking precincts, working phones, and not voting? But this little gem has convinced me to speak to all my Democrat, Independent and Conservative friends at home and let them know exactly what Republicans in the U.S. Senate stand for. I wonder....will that knowledge make them vote Rep? What do you think Senate Reps? Yes, take that as a threat I will make good on.
I hate to break to my fellow FReepers, but prepare to be sold out by our party elites yet again. The question is, what are we going to do about it?
A lot of FReepers are now saying they are fed up with the Republicans. Some are saying they will sit out the next election.
I think this is a terrible, horrible idea, and I'm very much opposed to the Republican Party as it now stands. The alternative, Democrats, is MUCH MUCH worse. Please have no doubt of that!
First, let's ask ourselves what President Bush and the Republicans have done right. The war is going pretty well, we have lower taxes, and we seem to have a couple apparently decent judges on the SCOTUS and many more good ones on the lower courts.
On the other hand, the Republican leadership, including Bush, is NOT conservative by any stretch of the imagination. These guys wouldn't know the US Constitution if they tripped over it. They aren't arguing about returning the federal government back to its Constitutional boundaries, they are simply arguing with the Democrats about how much power to seize.
Should we stop voting Republican when the immigration amnesty is passed (which we all know is going to happen)? NO! If you vote for a third party or don't vote at all, you are are only going to make the situation worse.
You know, many pundits have clearly identified the various problems, but not many are offering solutions. I'm going to offer one. It starts with recognizing the enemy. Our enemy is the RNC just as much as it's the Democrats.
Let me give you an example. I'm from Oklahoma, and most would agree we have a pretty conservative delegation. Is it common knowledge that the RNC fought tooth and nail to defeat Tom Coburn, someone who is currently fighting the good fight for conservatism? Yes, the RNC supports RINOs. Face it!
So, we have to get out there and defeat the incumbent RINOs. We MUST take control of the RNC!!! Third parties are just not realistic. Remember, both the RNC leadership, the MSM, and the Democrats will work together to annihilate a third party.
Don't give up! Fight like hell to get true conservatives into office via the Republican Party. That's the best chance of eventually winning this war against the big government types. And yes, even if you fail to get a RINO incumbent out, don't stop voting for the best of the worst, because the worst is REALLY REALLY bad.
So, prepare for the RINO sellout on the immigration problem. It's coming, because the Senate RINOs and Democrats are in the majority. We can still correct the problem later if we get true conservatives into power and tip the scales.

Yeah. Ol' Lou has really surprised a lot of people. On the Illegal Alien issue he's one tough hombre. (No pun intended.)
It was Nationwide and it was about 800,000 immigrants who had applied legally. Problem was 25,000 or so had criminal records that were not investigated. The normal disqualifiers were waived. Almost 4 times the normal number of immigrants became documented in one single year. With motor voter and the other slick tricks the left used, it is impossible to say how many voted, but it is not in dispute HOW most of them voted. The left is running out of taxes and tricks.

Personally, I can't stand Lou. I agree with some of his stands on immigration but he never calls out the Democrats on this issue. He just finds every situation a chance to bash the administration.
There isn't a single issue that he doesn't bash the President on... not one.
Give them a one way ticket back to wherever they came from. I don't care what their children have accomplished. I'm sure there are highly skilled professionals who have parents who've driven drunk or shoplifted. The illegal alien parents are criminals.
I'm thinking what is going to happen is either "nothing" or there will be some sort of bill with "amnesty" but an intense border defense put up... perhaps a wall in some areas and National Guard troops in some areas.
