Senators Reach Deal to Revive Immigration Bill
LA Times ^ | May 11, 2006 | AP

WASHINGTON -- Senate leaders reached a deal today on reviving a broad immigration bill that could provide millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become American citizens and said they'll try to pass it before Memorial Day.

The agreement brokered by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and Minority Harry Reid, D-Nev., breaks a political stalemate that has lingered for weeks while immigrants and their supporters held rallies, boycotts and protests to push for action.

Key to the agreement is who will be negotiating a compromise with the House, which last December passed an enforcement-only bill that would subject the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States to felony charges as well as deportation.

You got that right.

The hyphenating pols would be committing political suicide if they passed amnesty.

Anti-amnesty is a consensus issue that cuts across all sectors of the political spectrum.

All of them up on Capital Hill are getting the same message from their constituents ---- stop the illegal invasion.

As I have said since this all began, THERE WILL BE NO IMMIGRATION BILL PASSED BEFORE NOVEMBER.

I've heard you say that. And it may even turn out to be true. But tell me, why would Frist and other Republican leaders do all of the political damage that they're doing to the party by chumming up to the likes of Kennedy to try to pass legislation to appease illegal aliens? It doesn't make sense if they're not actually trying to pass something. If your theory is true, why alienate the Republican base just to get no bill passed? Why not champion a get tough border security bill to let the Democrats crap all over it? Then it will make the Democrats look bad in November for being so weak on national security.

"I hope everyone on these threads contacts Congress. Just moaning and complaining on Free Republic isn't going to cut it--call, fax, email, every day!"

Yup, and get back letters like I've received from my GOP representative that extol the virtues of the economy and how we are winning the war on terror. And...I almost forgot...go to the polls and vote for me and wassiname so we can continue to fight for you...

I swear, I don't believe they read the letters.

Frist holds no power.

McCain brokered the "compromise", I don't care what they put out to the public stating otherwise. McCain is the real leader of the Senate.

I hope everyone on these threads contacts Congress. Just moaning and complaining on Free Republic isn't going to cut it--call, fax, email, every day! We can stop this, but we have to act, not just talk. The House is our only hope now because the sellout in the Senate is well underway.

I hear you. I just went to my Congressman's web site and see he has intorduced a tough border security bill without some of the crap that caused the commotion regarding HR 4437. I then called his office and told him that in any compromise with the Senate bill, border security is most important.

I have posted the highlights of the Representative Pearce's bill (H.R. 5067, the Border Security and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2006) as a separate thread here:

Pearce Re-Introduces Pure Border Security Bill as Solution to Comprehensive Legislation (NM-2)

I have a theory, which I will expand upon in an upcoming rant, for why the Republicans are doing this. I think they are setting up the DEMS for a major temper tantrum which will expose them finally for the true nut-cases they are.

I think they want to snatch everything away at the last minute, like snatching food from a dog's bowl, so it will snarl at you and show you what he is really like.

When this bill stalls in committee, you are going to see illegals marching in the streets again, flush with support from the Democrats. The public will react in horror, and vote against Democrats for their support of lawlessness.

It's not but the GOP will be re-elected, and you well know it, because the alternative is too horrible to contemplate.

To continue predicting, as you do, Republican defeat based on a personal approach to an issue is infantile. Try reading some actual polls or political analysis. Did you notice that DeWine, one of the open border guys, is easily leading his Dem opponent?

So who, exactly, is going to defeat the GOP? Diane Feinstein? Chuck Schumer? Ain't gonna happen. In fact, the GOP will gain a couple of seats in each house in November. Bank on it.

If the US government spent as much time guarding the border as they did monitoring 'vigilante' groups..... oh never mind.

Why in the heck does McStain get to force this crap down our necks? First Anti-Free speech, then no money in politics (except for indians that support him), now millions of new registered democrats. If you think they don't vote now you are kidding yourself.

McStain must be playing for that VP spot with Hillary for him to make immigration such a big deal. Only a complete psychopath with present this bill knowing it will be the death nell of the republican party.

So says you. If the Republicans do not distinguish themselves from the Democrats on this issue soon, they will have a rocky future come November. This is not a personal issue, it is a state issue, and the border states are taking the brunt of the open borders. If that bothers the Republicans, as it should, then they should do something about it. If it does not bother them, then they are not Republicans.

So, then, the question remains What is to be done?

You're well-informed, why do you think the Republicans in the Senate are unwilling to listen to the huge majority of the public that opposes amnesty and wants border enforcement?

You are far more intelligent than the politicians are. They aren't smart enough to have thought of this.

And based on absolutely no evidence. Show me one of the GOP senators who has an open-borders position who is vulnerable specifically because of that position. Not DeWine. Certainly not Burns (who'se pretty closed border). Not Santorum. Not Talent.

Your thesis falls apart when you have to submit it to any kind of test. Meanwhile, a closed border congressional candidate, Bilbray, who is liberal in other areas, is struggling in San Diego. So how do you explain that?

The onus is on you to prove that this specific issue is hurting specific Republicans. We all like to carp about it, but I can't see that it's having any ELECTORAL effect. And yes, says I.

Called Bill Frist's office. Told them "tell them all, all Republicans who voted/vote for this compromise, that they can get their votes from their illegal alien constituency and that all my donations are going to the Minutemen from this day on".
