While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen -- and telling the Mexican government where they are. According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants -- and if and when violence is used against border crossers.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that migrants' rights are being observed.
"It's not a secret where the Minuteman volunteers are going to be," Mario Martinez said Monday.
"This ... simply makes two basic statements -- that we will not allow any lawlessness of any type, and that if an alien is encountered by a Minuteman or arrested by the Minuteman, then we will allow that government to interview the person."
Minuteman members were not so sanguine about the arrangement, however, saying that reporting their location to Mexican officials nullifies their effectiveness along the border and could endanger their lives.
"Now we know why it seemed like Mexican officials knew where we were all the time," said Chris Simcox, founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. "It's unbelievable that our own government agency is sending intelligence to another country. They are sending intelligence to a nation where corruption runs rampant, and that could be getting into the hands of criminal cartels.
"They just basically endangered the lives of American people."

American law. I could give a damn about foreign or international law unless I'm a guest in a foreign country. I've been stationed all over the world and I understand following the rules of a foreign country. Again, that's not the issue for me. When you invade my country I don't care about your rights--civil, international or intergalactic for that matter. All I care about is sending you back. Once you get there you can have a chat with your government representatives and tell them why you invaded a sovereign country.
That caught my eye, too. I find it hard to believe that it was just an accidental slip of the tongue.
Unfortunately, it is very likely that this does happen.
"Dude, judicial appointments is rearranging deck chairs if laws are selectively enforced."
That bears repeating.
"I thought this whole issue was about people obeying the law."
Illegal immigrants are breaking the law by entering our country in an illegal manor.
This is insane, this would mean if I call in a tip about smuggling or illegals (which I do) to BP, then they have to tell the Mexican Government who and where I am?? That is all the Minutemen are doing, phoning in information.
I know you did not write this, but surely with your LE background you can see what is wrong with this picture.
It's time now, but nobody wants to start first.
Agreed - Republicans are horrible at winning over minority groups through pandering. I really think that the strategy will be to ramp up the some homosexual agenda issues before the election to get the GOP faithful back in line.
Horsesh!t!
The Mex government, such as it is, undoubtedly perceives the Minutemen as effective, and therefore a threat to the income stream from wetbacks sending money back home!
It's not just him- the article makes it sound like the Minutemen are making arrests, I think they made it sound that way to justify what they are doing, which of course there is no justification for.
If you tell the RNC your money now goes to the Minutemen, do they pass your name on to the Mexican government?
DD, sent the link on FR. Just got back from there. Outrage on this is at a boiling point.
"Unbelievable, outrageous, and sickening!
This is what we get from a so-called "conservative, right-wing" government???
For all those who pronounce the imminent doom of the Republic if the rat party takes over this year my question would be:
What the *ell would be the difference????"
When it comes to national security, winning in Iraq, and fighting the war on terror, I am not willing to leave it in the hands of Democrats. Outraged as I am at Bush's siding with them on this issue, there must be some way to elect Republicans who WILL do the job that Bush won't.
Again I ask, does anyone know where I can get a list of Republicans who are running in November? I want to support anyone who is FOR effective border security (wall or fence and patrols) and AGAINST earned amnesty.
It shouldn't come into play, but it seems that it is. I see no justificatio for the Border Patrol to tell the Mexican government anything about the activities of the Minutemen or me or any other citizen that is calling them with tips.
Thanks for the link. It seems like advocating the termination the NAFTA, CAFTA and FTAA treaties would be a winning campaign issue.
Another one of those "if you repeat the lie enough times some stupids will believe it" political talking points operative.
I hope the pay is good, the tactics are getting OLD.
Let me guess, OUR tax dollars are being spent to provide FREE lawyers for people invading our country? Absolute insanity!
