Close to probably true (barring any unforeseen revelations).

God bless Porter Goss! Patriot warrior .. served this country honorably for decades; given the thankless and retched mission of cleaning out the rat-infested CIA .. and removing the vermin, and he did. Thank you .. God's blessings and safety to you and yours.

As much as he has a very left wing background so not my cup of tea he handled himself well internationally.

Several theories are being put forward.

1) Too chummy with Gordon Brown

2) Went out on a limb on foreign policy not always following government line eg categorically stating there would be no military action against Iran. The PM has never ruled this out.

3) Friendship with Condi Rice including taking her to his home town constituency. Did not go down well with local labour party activists.

Some speculation about the prostitution/duke cunningham/#3 Foggo at the CIA, but nothing concrete.

"Sources say" (LOL!) Negroponte asked him to resign.

If it's to be General Hayden, he's sure been right in the thick of things in the DNI's office (and before that Director of NSA):

Whoever is picked, I sure hope it's going to be someone who will do some public hangings of CIA lib scoundrels and set things straight on the 9/11 Omission-commission, Pflamegate, etc. That's probably too much to hope for!

If you look at how Negroponte and Hayden have been busy re-organizing the the entire intel community (to whatever extent they have been allowed to), and how Hayden has basically been the DNI's right-hand man, then the rumor that Hayden could be heading to take over at CIA next could make a great deal of sense (though it's not clear to me how great a promotion that would be for Hayden compared to being #2 for the DNI over ALL of the intel agencies, but they may think it's time to take the next big step and truly reform the CIA from within).

I am mainly concerned with getting good intelligence about Iran. We can't afford another big intelligence screw up.

Most provoking observations thus far, imo:

*Pentagon folks in shock, didn't know (is that possible?)
*CIA heads don't resign or even get fired without at least a weeks' notice
*Bush very unlikely to delegate cabinet-level hiring (but maybe firing) yet Negroponte is handling this
*Hookergate allegations a going-away smear job by the CIA's sedition wing to make political hay out of this.
*Goss may run for the US Senate seat in Florida to kick that idiot Katherine Harris out of the way? (but why the rush?)

Until I see any real information, I'm going with "Goss was passed over for DNI and now Negroponte is ready to put his own stamp on the CIA with new Director Hayden....." As long as Hayden (or whoever the next CIA Director may be) is ready to seriously improve the place and get rid of the lib traitors I'm prepared to be happy about this......

I don't remember a cabinet shakeup with less real info..

And in such time specualtion starts broad and sometimes narrows to the truth and sometimes we never get the truth.

There are any number of reasons why Porter Goss chose to resign. You have been insinuating -- yes wildly -- that it has something to do with hookers, corruption, etc. You don't know the reason he resigned. Neither do I. You're free to speculate and insinuate. I'm free to say it's bull crap until and unless I learn differently through sources a whole heck of a lot more credible than someone spouting off on an internet forum.

You're right, of course, getting the best intel going forward, especially about Iran, is #1 priority by far.

Still, it could be very helpful to set the record straight on a number past issues, since (1) a lot of it is not only in the past but continues to affect important future activities, and (2) gross distortions of the intel processes and product from the left has done grave damage to our national resolve and standing both domestically and internationally.
