BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Concerns that fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico could be harmed by a proposed offshore natural gas port have not been resolved, opening the possibility that Gov. Kathleen Blanco could veto the project, administration officials say.
Blanco has until Sunday to file any objections to a proposed federal license for the Main Pass Energy Hub, a liquefied natural gas terminal being sought by New Orleans-based McMoRan Exploration Co.
The governor has said she will invoke her veto power over such ports unless they are proven environmentally safe. But only one LNG port exists in the Gulf and scientific evidence is limited.
Several other ports are proposed off Louisiana's coast. Although Blanco openly backed the projects initially, she has since voiced concern about environmental effects.

Environmental concerns? They'll never learn will they?
Blank - o ..voted for it, before she voted against it...typical sounding move
Proof positive that politcians still don't get it. What's wrong with those people?
...... What's wrong with those people?....
Gross ignorance and cowardice. She lacks the knowledge and doesn't trust her advisors. The result is dithering and preparing a defense. Her ass is all that counts. It must be completely covered.
China will be drilling off the Keys and our environmental idiots will complain that we will cause pollution.
(It's going to happen. China and Cuba have signed an agreement. Which, btw, makes me wonder about our 200mile exploration range in the waters...)
"Environmental concerns? They'll never learn will they?"
Nope. I have personally heard the New Orleans COE district beg for money from the MVD COE Division and eventually Congress to update and maintain levees, among other things.
Every time it was turned down because money was earmarked for some waterfowl preservation, habitat renewal or denied because of environmental impacts. We saw how that turned out.
When it comes to pandering on the environment the Republicans are no different. Bush won't allow drilling off Flordia, Schwartzenegger won't allow it off California, Dole threatens to block it off North Carolina, and on and on and on.
I'm just surprised that the good governor still has her priorities out of whack. The lefties go waaayyy out of their way to protect the ocean or some forest from some perceived threat, then a hurricane or a wildfire comes along and puts them in their place, and they come back with the some old crap. This is so frustrating.
200 miles would put the line on the other side of Cuba.
It's 200 miles or halfway between two nations if the distance is less then 400 miles.
With your examples, it is realy the NIMBY mentality that's exploiting environmental concerns as cover.
And with diagonal and lateral drilling, how much oil will Cuba and China be siphoning from American deposits before they actually tap Cuba's?
