Allen, indeed, is a favorite among Republican Party players. He's also the one Democrats worry about most, according to an insider who told me: "The one Hillary's worried about is George Allen."

I dont think the MLK thing was such a big deal, even mccain voted against MLK day. Most of the country at the time did not support a MLK day.
I dont think the flag and the noose are a big deal, bill clinton had a confederate flag in his office during the 12 years he was governor.

I'd think an Allen candidacy would make her job considerably easier than running against someone who can pull half of her own base out from under her. So you are hoping the GOP nominates someone who will appeal to the moonbat left? I like to think a straightforward conservative who can clearly articulate conservative principles and apply them to our current circumstances would get an acceptably large turnout of his own base.

Those - the confederate flag, the noose, voting against MLK, Jr day - are the reasons Allen just shot his candidacy in the foot: He recently came out in favor of a formal apology for slavery. Can you say, "Reparations"? Why, yes you can!

Now there'd be a way for Pence to lose my support instantly. And I highly doubt I'd be the only one.

Considering the democrats will accuse any republican of being a racist i think some people are making it a bigger deal than it actually is. Don't forget, mccain voted against MLK day in the senate, and rudy will pull the lowest % of the black vote of any republican candidate.

but, IF, George Allen were to meet James Webb instead of Harris Miller in the November election, he may indeed lose his Senate seat and then have no creditability in the presidential race...admittedly, a big "IF" because most GOPers will be voting for Miller in next month's Democratic primary. Still, there is a growing number of us Virginians who might perfer Reagan's No. 1 Navy man over a certified Bushbot rubberstamp

Thanks, I like it too.
The liberals feed him the talking points to test on FNS, then if Brit don't slap him out of his chair, they go national with them!

the one she's really worried about is someone like McCain or GiulianiWhy's that? McCain and Guiliani don't have a snowball's chance of being nominated.
But then again, that goes for Hitlery equally.

I read the Ryan Lizza article on Allen in the New Republic. Aside from the Confederate pin, he claims that as a boy Allen threw one of his younger brothers through a glass door, broke another's collarbone, and dragged his younger sister by her hair. He also implies that Allen may have sprayed racist graffiti on school property prior to the arrival of a team from a black school.
I don't know - maybe this stuff will get no wider play. To me, Allen looks like a sure-fire way to get Hillary inaugurated in 2009.

The electorate isn't made up entirely of loony liberals and cocopuff conservatives. Indeed, the fringiest, nuttiest wings of the electorate are probably only 5% a piece, or less.
The mindset on FR and DU, and places like that, is probably less than 2% of the electorate total.
Just as DUers make a mistake thinking that the country is as loony as they are, we FRers shouldn't make the mistake thinking that a strong majority of the USA thinks the way the conventional wisdom on FR thinks.

Senator Allen didn't shoot his presidential aspirations in the foot with the vote against MLK day: he did it when he endorsed a formal apology for the slavery era. As I wrote him, he would accomplish nothing with an apology other than opening the door for reparations.

I worry more about how the likes of intellectual giant Barbara Boxer made him look bewildered and befuddled a while back on one of the Sunday shows.
Dubya's communication problems make it very clear that we shouldn't elect another slow witted guy to make the Republican case. Dubya was the best choice, but he can't be the best we have. That's impossible.
No more slow witted, flat footed good old boys. Lets try someone who can speak the language this time. The admin's current problems are really harming the GOP.

I agree with you, but I already said why she's really worried about them. She's worried that if they were nominated they would drain enough from her supporters to win, added to their Republican supprt.
I didn't say they WOULD be nominated; I suggested she'd be worried IF they were nominated. I don't think she's worried at all about George Allen. In fact, I think she'd welcome him as "just another conservative white guy, oh, can't we have a WOMAN, so caring, so FEEEEEELING for once?"
Not saying that would fly necessarily, but he's a starker contrast to Hil than the other two, who appeal to moderates in the way she'd like to, with her "rightward" turn. (Ha ha)

Indeed, the fringiest, nuttiest wings of the electorate are probably only 5% a piece, or less.Depends on what you mean by fringy, because the most electorally successful President of the past generation - Ronald Reagan - was more conservative than any of these contenders, save Pence and Tancredo.
Don't assume that the right and left (despite their names) are just mirror images of each other. I think we can all safely consider it a foregone conclusion that the public is more conservative than the LSM presents it as being.

Problem with Allen is, we don't support Senators for President. They are the problem. It's the old, "What have you done for me lately?" addage.
P.S. read my tagline before you speak of Blackwell. We need him too much here.

I'd like to see a candidate who appeals to the right-to-center, because we're going to need independent votes in 2008. After the bumbling going on in Iraq, and all of the other mistakes the GOP Congress and Bush administration have made, the center is going to be out for blood. All Hillary would have to do is capitalize on that, which can easily be done against Allen.
This whole confederate thing will KILL Allen's chances in the general election. I can already see Democratic attack ads- they'll play the race card like all hell, and that'll definitely get Hillary more support. I don't think the whole conferederate flag thing can be just blown off.
I'd like to see a Reagan-type conservative in 2008, but I honestly don't think such a candidate can win after all of the blunders of George Bush and the GOP Congress in the past few years. Granted, Bush and the Congress haven't enacted conservative policy, but the public won't know any better, so they'll assume Allen is just like Bush, Frist, and the rest of the GOP bunglers from the past few years.
