didn't mean to imply you were concerned about U93 opening third, I was just cautioning that these are very early estimates for a single day and the whole weekend doesn't always follow Friday. The same website forecast U93 at #2.

Great minds think alike.

The rinky-dink theater in the little town I live near isn't showing it but I work part-time in Midland so I will watch it up there.

Everyone remember, 10% of box office is being donated to the 9/11 memorial fund. Even if you feel you cannot emotionally handle the film, buy a ticket or two to support it.

The per-screen average is higher than any other substantial release. The picture will have legs. It should do better than $40 million. And it will do well in all ancillary markets.

Way below estimations, which is disappointing considering how well received it's among both moviegoers and critics (they love it). It won't do well overseas, but it might have better legs than most movies. The budget was only $15M, so it will probably eventually be profitable.

I must say these boxofficemojo numbers are really low across the board compared to forecasts.

The movie sounds pretty good. It's gotten a lot of horse dung from the MSM. Note last Friday was the day USA (USSR?) Today decided to promote some B.S. conspiracy flick about 9/11.

Where can you find out where it's playing? I wouldn't even know how to check local theaters since the only movie I've paid to see in years was The Passion of Christ and that was well publicized.

United 93 is a limited release in selected theaters.
I do not know why this stratagy was chosen but F93 is packing more people in per theater than #1 or #2

per-theater
#1 - 3,639 theaters - $1,240 each

#2 - 2,o4o '' - $1,970 each

#3(F93) 1,795 '' - $2,050 each

Movies like this make a lot more when they hit DVD. I saw it last night, and I'm buying it ( AT WAL-MART ;^D ) when it's released.

Well, my roommates work in the industry.

But, in any case, I actually learned most of what I know about the economics of film from a long and active career playing the Hollywood Stock Exchange.

I don't believe it was a matter of "choosing a strategy." It's really hard to get a movie into the mainstream theaters. Hundreds of independent movies are made each year, and very few of them hit the big screen.

The big studios "own" the distribution system.

LOL - and American Dreamz has $5 mil in 8 days.

United 93 is one movie that will benefit from word of mouth. I saw it yesterday as I wanted to do it on opening day. Wife will go Wednesday. Daughter and SIL will also see it. I believe it will have some legs.

The picture will have legs.

It had very little competition this weekend...A horrible Robin Williams comedy and a movie about girl's gymnastics...

The big guns start rolling out the next few weeks...Mission Impossible III next week, Poseidon the week after that, then The Da Vinci Code...I'd expect box office to decline fairly rapidly.

I suspect it will be around for a while. The only people that have told me they won't see it are my lefty friends. I will go, not this weekend. I never see movies on opening weekend as they are too crowded. The more people in the theater, the more talking out loud, the more I get aggravated. I will be super aggravated if people are disrespectful enough to talk during United 93.

"United 93 will become the most watched film in American history."

Think it can beat Gone With the Wind, Star Wars or The Sound of Music? How about ET, The Ten Commandments or Titanic? Then there's Jaws, Dr. Zhivago & The Exorcist to beat out, too.

I'm thinking not. I'll see it on DVD when I can. I'm not up for having my heart yanked out of my chest while I'm with a bunch of strangers in a theater. ;)

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

If your timeframe for history covers the next 67 years, as did GWTW from 1939 to now, I'll consider your prediction but $1,293,085,600 (One Billion, 293 Million...)from then until now is going to be impossible to beat, IMHO.

Hmmm... indeed. I didn't mean you personally.
