Post columnist Nick Clooney, just back from an eight-day trip that he and his son, actor George Clooney, made to Sudan and Chad, says he hopes the stories they relate will prompt more protection and humanitarian aid for 2 million refugees from the Sudan province of war-torn Darfur.
"This is an ongoing and terrible story that we were able to see up close," said Clooney. "These folks are helpless out there. There's nobody between them and very bad people.
"They have only minimal protection provided by the African Union. What's holding these people together is help from humanitarian agencies, 80 of them from around the world, many of them from the United States."
Nick Clooney will be writing about the trip in at least three columns, beginning Wednesday, and George Clooney, who filmed much of the trip, will be appearing on several television programs.
Both Clooneys plan to attend a "Rally to Stop Genocide" organized by the Save Darfur Coalition next Sunday in Washington, D.C.
"The reason we wanted to make the trip at this time was because of the demonstration on behalf of Darfur," said Clooney. "We're hoping to be able to make this as timely as possible and raise awareness."

Take it to the UN George.
Let me know if you get any action.
Can we revoke his passport and make him stay?
Why didn't they go when Clinton was in Power?
Bush as done more for the Africans then any sitting President, now we have to endure these two jerks with their diarrhea of the mouth disease.
If George is so concerned, why doesn't he scratch out a check to a Sudan relief fund instead of talking about what "we" should do?
there is a rally in Washington/SF this weekend for more help for Darfur. as a conservative and a Jew, i feel passionately about helping those people against the genocidal, murderous regime of Khartoum, and give my own time to influencing Congress, the President and the UN to send help. i'm glad to give any and all people credit for working for this worthy cause, including George Clooney. it brings a lot of people from different viewpoints together in a common cause, laying politics aside. this is a good thing and we need more of it. i believe Lt Gov Michael Steele is speaking in DC as well as Congressman Frank Wolf on the Republican side, as well as a lot of religious leaders, Elie Wiesel, etc
Let all these liberals give away their money lead off with "let them touch these things" Celine Dion, Oprah,The Clooneys',Kennedy,Kerry Sean Penn and all of the hollywood liberals I have no more money to give.
Exactly my thought when I read this.
What, exactly, DOES the U.N do besides attack America and its interests, and rape and pillage? And cost U.S. taxpayers tons of money?
I did see an interesting documentary the other night on the documentary channel (I live out in the sticks, where there is no cable, so I'm on satellite (sp).
It had a Canadian FORMER general for the U.N. go back to Rawanda, where a genocide occurred during the Clinton years, and he basically showed/told/illustrated how useless the U.N. is.
Did you see where they placed Iran on the Nuclear disarmament committee?
"This is an ongoing and terrible story that we were able to see up close," said Clooney. "These folks are helpless out there. There's nobody between them and very bad people."
Replace Sudan and Chad with Iraq before we went it. What would Clooney say then?
Yea,I did.
That just served to reinforce my feelings that the U.N is worthless -- The third world laughing at us while we pay their dictator/representatives big bucks.
I have written my Congressmen about my disdain for the U.N.
Got a half-assed stupid response from one.
Why don't they (or any of the posturing domestic do-gooders) ever travel to downtown Anycity, U.S.A, and try to help the homeless, the alcoholics, the bag ladies, and the insane there? Where, do they say, charity begins?
I have written my Congressman and Senators on many occasions, and can testify to the fact that half-assed stupid form responses from their staff is all you will EVER receive from them.
That is other than campaign literature asking for money.
Did they even listen to Bob Geldoff? That whole region is overrun with corruption, and aid money won't even get where it's supposed to go. The governments in those countries form the bulk of the problem.
Why don't they (or any of the posturing domestic do-gooders) ever travel to downtown Anycity, U.S.A, and try to help the homeless, the alcoholics, the bag ladies, and the insane there? Where, do they say, charity begins?
That's the documentary I watched, yank.
Yea, the Canadian is a whiner, but at least he went back and called the U.N. worthless **** for what they are.
And I commend him for that.
Don't know if I pinged you on this or not, but today the committee chair was talking about disbanding an agency that had outlived its usefullness.
I thought, for a brief moment, they were talking about the U.N., when in actuality they were talking about FEMA.
