So lemme see if I have this straight so far: We have Mary Mcarthy who was appointed by Clinton We have Sandy Berger who was appointed by Clinton We have the real Joe Wilson, who was appointed to some African nation and then Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council by Clinton We have Valerie Plame Joe Wilson's wife, who joined the CIA while Clinton was president and we have Dana Priestly who got her information from the aforesaid Mary Mcarthy, and we have William Goodfellow, husband of Dana Priestly who gets Joe Wilson speaking engagements. Tom Clancy eat your heart out. |
Selective Leaking
Tom Joscelyn brilliantly lays out a prior instance in which CIA agent Mary McCarthy, the leaker just fired from the CIA, entered the public record: her involvement in the bombing of al-Shifa, one of the targets in Sudan that the Clinton adminstration attacked in 1998.
http://www.instapundit.com/
TOM MAGUIRE: "The NY Times seems to think the political contributions of the sacked CIA officer are significant, but their investigative skills are apparently a bit rusty, since they are about $7,500 light in their reporting."
UPDATE: Lots of bloggers are jumping on this story: More here, here, and a big roundup here.
I'm pretty sure I know what the talk-radio folks will be talking about next week.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Still more here.

MARY MCCARTHY AND JOE WILSON?
Ace of Spades asks:

Curt at Flopping Aces points to a F/R commenter, Timeout, noting some interesting portfolio overlap:

CIA leaker fired
Washington Post journalist Dana Priest won a Pulitzer Prize for her reporting on the CIA secret prisons story; in this interview the prisons are described as gulags and Priest seems to have no problem with it: Dana Priest on secret gulags, CIA and war. (Hat tip: Doss.)
Now that an EU investigation has found no evidence of illegal CIA action, will her Pulitzer be revokedsince the story for which it was awarded was false?
Dont hold your breath.
But this time the McCarthy is waving a list of known... patriots.

CIA FIRES OFFICER MARY McCARTHY OVER ALLEGED LEAK
This is an egregious crime. It was operational, not just classified info. She put lives in danger, c**t. She disclosed top secret information. Jail time is too kind. Think about it.
Piece of advise for the Bushies...............FIRE ANY ONE THAT WORKED UNDER THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION, I mean really.
Strata-sphere has the straight dope here, an incredible post actually.
The latest fired CIA employee is Mary McCarthy, (one of many to come, I understand, apparently the Department of Justice said they have DOZENS of leak investigations ongoing);
Until July 2001, she served as special assistant to the president and senior director for intelligence programs on the National Security Council (NSC) Staff, under both Presidents Clinton and Bush. More here hat tip x-dhimmi
Over at Lucianne, THE SECRET WAR AGAINST PRESIDENT BUSH
Excellent complete overview over at Flopping Aces here, and important read;
... Dana Priest, who also won the George Polk Award and a prize from the Overseas Press Club this week for her articles, declined to comment Friday. She apparently came to the defense of Richard Clarke once. If she is one in the same, this person has betrayed a lot of people with her actions. More here...and Flopping Aces points out, lest we not forget what Porter Goss said;
Porter Goss told the Senate that these leaks had damaged our intelligence gathering capability and in so doing our national security:

Wilsongate: Motive, Means, and Opportunity
From my files: Wilson (as Ambassador to Gabon) had/has connections to the Gabon Chief of State, Omar Bongo, who was the chief African ally of the French oil company TotalFinaElf, a major beneficiary of the Oil-for-Food bribes. Prior to the Iraq War, they had a contract with Saddam's regime worth an estimated 12.5 to 27.0 billion barrels of oil reserves. Also he had connections via the Middle East Institute and Rock Creek, both of which are Saudi controlled.
Wilson's wife Jacqueline was also apparently a lobbyist for Bongo and it seems Wilson was pretty chummy with Saddam's weapons buyer, having dinner with him on the eve that Kuwait was invaded in 1990. She is now an advisor to Bongo, her picture from a 2005 conference can be found here That makes it very clear that there are connections to oil-for-food. No wonder Wilson can afford his lifestyle.

Who is Mary McCarthy? [The Great One, Mark Levin, weighs in...]--Well, as of this morning (Saturday) most of the drive-by media don't care. They're fixated with the weather and gas prices and anything else that will divert the public's attention from the stunning revelation that a Sandy Berger crony has apparently been leaking top-secret information from her high post at the CIA.
The blogs are all over it. See
Ace of Spades HQ and follow the links. The bloggers are reporting that the WaPo is carrying a story in Sunday's edition indicating that the investigation by the FBI is widespread, and that Rockefeller and Durbin and their staffs will be asked to take polygraphs, and that reporters who published the leaks may be subject to prosecution.

Mary McCarthy Identified As CIA Leaker
The identity of the CIA leaker fired for passing classified information to Washington Post writer Dana Priest has been revealed.
The officer flunked a polygraph exam before being fired on Thursday and is now under investigation by the Justice Department, NBC has learned. Intelligence sources tell NBC News the accused officer, Mary McCarthy, worked in the CIA's inspector general's office and had worked for the National Security Council under the Clinton and and George W. Bush administrations.
The leak pertained to stories on the CIAs rumored secret prisons in Eastern Europe, sources told NBC. The information was allegedly provided to Dana Priest of the Washington Post, who wrote about CIA prisons in November and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for her reporting.
Sources said the CIA believes McCarthy had more than a dozen unauthorized contacts with Priest. Information about subjects other than the prisons may have been leaked as well.
The sleuthing has begun ;
The report of the 9/11 Commission notes that the National Security staff reviewed the intelligence in April 2000 and concluded that the CIA's assessment of its intelligence on bin Laden and al-Shifa had been valid; the memo to Clinton on this was cosigned by Richard Clarke and Mary McCarthy, the NSC senior director for intelligence programs, who opposed the bombing of al-Shifa in 1998
Ace has pulled up the campaign contributions. No surprises there.

One of today's big news items is the dismissal of a person at Central Intelligence for leaking classified material to Washington Post Pulitzer Prize winner Dana Priest. Pajamas Media has a really big blog roundup. Some of the choice items.
Captains Quarters: Plugging the Leak says: In From the Cold comments: Strata-sphere Big Lizard: Story on the leaker leaked to the press -- That's how ingrained the practice is. You have to leak about the leak.

While everyone is doing all this wonderful investigating, can you keep this 1998 CIA "document dump" in mind? Who knows... it may tie in with something later. Murray Waas was later all over the Plame affair.
"Waas" up?! Where are those 20,000 CIA documents? (CLINTON WHITE HOUSE PANIC; MASSIVE LEAK OF NATIONAL SECURITY DOCUMENTS)
What kind of goodies do the documents reveal, you ask? (Yes, I can read your mind.) Here's just an example:
- appear to corroborate, according to sources who have read them, allegations by a former U.N. arms inspector that the Clinton administration concealed from Congress and the public details regarding Saddam Hussein's ambitious program to develop nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.
- new details on the Clinton policy towards China in which the White House allowed ballistic missile technology exports to China at the behest of wealthy Democratic campaign contributors.
- a history of the secret negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea, describing the failed policy of trying to buy off North Korea to forego its nuclear weapons policy
- describe in great detail the intelligence and policy failures that led to the detonations of nuclear weapons by India and Pakistan
Incidentally, my (barely awake) calculations indicate it was 7 years and 5 months ago today that this news broke on Drudge. It then disappeared almost overnight.
Assuming Murray's bowel habits are regular, he's already flushed about 2,705 of those 1-ply sheets down the toilet.

At the very least it's sabotage...the saboteurs were trying to undermine the policies of the duly elected President, and put thier own personal influence on policy. Thats insubordination at least, and treason at most.

Here's another thing to watch for. Remember the MD4BUSH affair? Well, it was discovered that maybe up to 4 or 5 people from the Washington Post may have been drive-by posters on that "O'Malley Rumours" thread, One of the drive-by posters (MrEd1964) eerily sounded like the executive editor. It was circumstantial evidence, but it sure does need to be pursued.
I won't clutter this thread with the evidence. Here's the link: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1516499/posts?page=258#258

I'm still trying to understand why she wasn't arrested, handcuffed on the spot and whisked off to jail, pending a trial for treason in time of war. Maybe she has already cut some deal ? In the international scheme of things, reporters and political appointees can typically end up being cannon fodder for the various power interests.

Appreciate the kind words-- I don't read this stuff, in depth, as much as I would like to-- hunting down and skimming links for quotes or more relevant links is about all I have time for-- but this may be the Administration's "October Surprise," come early.
It will be fascinating to watch all the twisting and spinning.

It's Hard to Keep Up...
...with the revelations coming out about Dana Priest, the Washington Post reporter who published the "secret prisons" story, and Mary McCarthy, the Democratic Party activist and now-fired CIA bureaucrat who leaked the story to Priest.
Sweetness & Light points out that Dana Priest is married to William Goodfellow, the Executive Director of the the Center for International Policy (CIP). At the top of its web site is CIP's mission statement: "Promoting a foreign policy based on cooperation, demilitarization and human rights." It appears that CIP's idea of "demilitarization and human rights" is best exemplified by Cuba.
Sweetness & Light goes on to hightlight connections among CIP, which operates The Iraq Policy Information Program, Joe Wilson, and Dana Priest. This is not just guilt by association: Priest herself participated in an anti-Iraq war program put on by her husband's group, CIP, along with Joe Wilson and other even more unsavory characters. (Via The Corner).
Then we have Ms. McCarthy, the CIA leaker, who turns out to be a substantial contributor to the Democratic Party. Andy McCarthy notes that the Washington Post has published a sympatetic portrait of McCarthy--who leaked, remember, to the Post, resulting in a story for which the Post won a Pulitzer Prize--which touts McCarthy as unbiased without ever mentioning that she was a Kerry supporter who has given up to $7,700 a year to Democratic candidates!
So we have a Democratic Party activist violating federal law by leaking classified information to an antiwar activist on the payroll of the Washington Post, which publishes the criminal leak and is awarded a prize by the left-wing Pulitzer committee.
Finally, several bloggers are speculating about the possibility that the whole "secret prisons" story might have been a sting operation by the CIA designed to catch a leaker. I don't think this can be true, based mosly on public statements that have been made by intelligence officials, but it is a curious fact that there doesn't seem to be any evidence for the existence of the secret prisons other than Dana Priest's story. Can it be that this is one secret the CIA has actually been able to keep, but for the leak?
