04/20/06 FOX Poll: Gloomy Economic Views; Bush Approval at New Low

NEW YORK — More Americans disapprove than approve of how George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and Congress are doing their jobs, while a majority approves of Condoleezza Rice. President Bush’s approval hits a record low of 33 percent this week, clearly damaged by sinking support among Republicans.

Opinions are sharply divided on whether Rumsfeld should resign as secretary of defense. In addition, views on the economy are glum; most Americans rate the current economy negatively, and twice as many say it feels like the economy is getting worse rather than better. These are just some of the findings of the latest FOX News national poll.

President Bush’s job approval rating slipped this week and stands at a new low of 33 percent approve, down from 36 percent two weeks ago and 39 percent in mid-March. A year ago this time, 47 percent approved and two years ago 50 percent approved (April 2004).

I agree with you and others, that gas prices and other issues important to conservatives is driving this low approval rating. However, I don't think it will be reflected near as much when voting in elections.

"There is a direct correlation between Bush's poll numbers and the price of gasoline" Therein lies Bush's problem. To voters, "The Economy" = Gas Prices. That's it. I live in a blue state, and after Iraq, the number one thing people at my workplace bash Bush over is gas prices. Every day, nonstop.

You got it! Here in Kansas, a lot of people who used to support the President on the WOT now think he "tricked" us into Iraq, "to get the gas prices up". It's all about the GASOLINE prices, stupid. Everything else, even Iraq and the illegals, is just background noise.

If he got the guest worker program he's looking for the border could be tightened. Then we could make sure that those coming in to work aren't criminals or terrorists.

How does legalizing illegals here in the country help to secure the border?

"They deserve the do-nothing felon and used car salesman who proceeded him. I'm starting to apply that to Republicans as well."

There you go. This is the next step republicans like yourself turning on the conservative wing of the party because we don't support Vicente's illegal invasion plan. It's not that we are one issue voters. Expand your mind and see how this one issue affects nearly every facet of American life as we know it. Not to mention how it will forever effect our grand kids lives if we don't fight to give them the type of America we enjoyed pre-invasion. That's why conservatives will never support the sell out of America. Don't blame conservatives for the president's miserable numbers. When the president starts focus on American citizens and letting Vicente worry about his his numbers will turn around.

Look at the bright side everyone. At least they can't get much lower! Eventually there will be a leveling off with only his family and a few close friends that approve of his handling of things. Maybe they should extend the polls into Mexico to see if his numbers get a bump down there. Hell, he probably would get a higher rating down there lol.

Look, I'm not completely defending W. I'm just pointing out that he sticks to his beliefs, even when it angers many in his own party.

It especially angers, IMO, the vast minority but very loud on FR that wishes for mines and sharpshooters along the border(ala the Berlin wall).

Even retarded morons have a say.

They didn't in the beginning.

Sadly I have seen living vegetables, rolled out of nursing homes and bussed to the polls to vote.

But Crack Smoking Trixie is the extreme to which the MSM will play on sympathies and it is a shame that more people associate with this extreme. In reality $50 grand a year is livable and still have some money for entertainment and I'm not talking entertainment to go see Crack Smoking Trixie.

Bush's immigration proposals are very well thought out. The Republicans in Congress are the problem as far as I'm concerned....especially those in "Blue States". The constant drumbeat of negatives from the MSM are also a big factor. Bush will have to hire someone to daily untangle the lies that they push.

The reason why people are feelong gloomy on economics is that cost of living in 3 areas, and these areas are housing, energy and medical, have skyrocketed in price the last few years, while median incomes have stagnated. While top line GDP numbers have been good, in part due to housing andf financial activities, this does not reflect in the overall economic realities of the US, and explains why many feel ill at ease with the economy.

"How does legalizing illegals here in the country help to secure the border?"

1. We know who they all are
2. We don't let anyone new in without knowing who they are

I'm not 100% behind this, mind you. I see the logic in it, though.

Well how about that 50,000 page energy bill he signed with all that fanfare?

No drilling...no new refineries....no cutting down the different kind of gasoline that needs to be distilled.
Just tax breaks and loopholes....well next stop is $4.00 gas.

And we wonder why his #'s are low?

1. We know who they all are

But they're already over the border, so legalizing them doesn't help to secure it.

2. We don't let anyone new in without knowing who they are

That had nothing to do with my question. I was asking how legalizing illegals already here helps with border security. It doesn't.

"I have met the enemy, and he is us. Well, not me, but certainly the one-issue Republicans who whine, threaten, and sulk if the President doesn't do or say exactly what they want on a particular issue. These sorts will lose the next election for the GOP."

I couldn't agree more!!

"Bush's immigration proposals are very well thought out."

You're joking right? We shouldn't even be having a debate, in the middle of a war, about securing our borders. Bush should be directing Homeland Security to do what its' name implies. You don't need a debate or a bill to secure the damn borders. Then and only then should we debate our illegal problem. The debate should be between legal American citizens not with Vicente or his citizens who march in our streets, pissing on our flag. Very well thought out my arse.

You know all those pundits who have been saying that no matter how good the economy is on paper, people don't "feel" the economy getting better.

Maybe - MAYBE - they're right. This can't all be Iraq.

"The reason why people are feelong gloomy on economics is that cost of living in 3 areas, and these areas are housing, energy and medical..."

If a pollster asked me how I thought the economy was doing, I'd say "Great." And it is. For me.

But if they ask my buddy who runs a lawn and landscaping business they are going to get a very different answer. My buddy is getting killed by gas prices. Every time the price goes up a nickel or a dime it comes right out of his bottom line.

He has no choice but to raise his prices. But that's going to cost him -- at least in the short run. His customers are as likely to drop him and hire someone else as they are to agree to a rate hike.

Besides, imagine running a business where you had to go to each customer, individually, and tell them you have to raise your rates. You're not going to get a whole lot of sympathy.

So for my friend the economy blows. There are a lot of people--republicans--in the same boat.

Republican voters are the most disloyal voters out there. They got alito and yet are still complaining about miers.

I don't know what to tell you... we seem to see things through different lenses. About Miers, by the way.. and this is STILL a big issue, as far as I am concerned, because that was the beginning where the president really pi--- me off. And I still... STILL wonder why did go with Miers when he had the chance of LIFETIME to make a statement, etc, etc, etc.

Why do we have Alito?.. because of MIRACLE and it's not thanks to the president but DESPITE of him. So although I am DELIGHTED we got Alito in, I can not forget that the president made it so difficult for us... and the the criticism, etc, etc. but ok, that was then

Fast Forward to the present... on the border: Total failure to secure it... etc, etc, etc.

- There are a lot of dumbasses out there. DJI currently at 11,346.97, the highest its been in 5 years. Yep the economy sucks alright </sarc>

Yep, I must concur and agree with you but unfortunately all good things must come to an end sometime. As you point out the DOW is peaking right now at a level it hasn't seen since May 2001 & the Nasdaq is trading at levels it hasn't seen since Feb 2001. So it probably won't take a rocket scientist or a Liberal to figure out what's next, unfortunatly ;-(
