04/20/06 FOX Poll: Gloomy Economic Views; Bush Approval at New Low

NEW YORK — More Americans disapprove than approve of how George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and Congress are doing their jobs, while a majority approves of Condoleezza Rice. President Bush’s approval hits a record low of 33 percent this week, clearly damaged by sinking support among Republicans.

Opinions are sharply divided on whether Rumsfeld should resign as secretary of defense. In addition, views on the economy are glum; most Americans rate the current economy negatively, and twice as many say it feels like the economy is getting worse rather than better. These are just some of the findings of the latest FOX News national poll.

President Bush’s job approval rating slipped this week and stands at a new low of 33 percent approve, down from 36 percent two weeks ago and 39 percent in mid-March. A year ago this time, 47 percent approved and two years ago 50 percent approved (April 2004).

"Not only that but what does Rummy have to do with the economy? W hasn't been listening to his constituents for a while now."

In a similar vein, I ask myself what business Rumsfeld has pontificating on the political situation in Iraq, when his responsibility is to ensure the United States has a capable military force to defend her.

Amen, I'm so sick of reading these hand-wringing Freepers who jump ship at the first sign of trouble. They're no different than the knee jerk American public that demands blue skies and green lights as far as the eye can see and won't weather the storms that come upon our nation without turning on a hard working president who has tried to make it all better, and fixed a hell of a lot of the nation's worst problems that fell upon him when taking office, i.e. national security a wreck, the economy failing, etc. Like you say, these people deserve President Hillary and a Pelosi-controlled congress. Personally I spit on the whole stupid bunch of them

Some extreme posters think by allowing the RATS to have full control of everything will cause regular folks to rise up and revolt against liberalism. Thus paving the way for Ann COulter and Michael Savage fans assume power.

Another would be that W sincerely believes that a guest worker program and a path to citizenship for those here now is what's best for the nation.

Apparently he also believes that lack of a secure border is what's best for our nation, at least judging by his actions instead of his rhetoric. Why else wouldn't he be pushing for border security first as a way of building people's confidence that his "path to citizenship" won't turn out to be another fiasco like the '86 amnesty?

Has nothing to do with Rove.

Most people have busy lives and only hear the mainstream media reports.

As long as left wing east coast elite media are allowed to take down the gop then the party is finished.

You have the airwaves, magazines, newspapers bashing bush 24/7.

The few conservative voices out there were killed. Mike Kelly of the washington times and barbara olsen.

The media is at least 90 percent in the dem camp.

When the media is an arm of the howard dean's office then your party is history.

After 9/11 gop was able to blunt the media effect.

But with 9/11 in the far past the media is becoming a monster that is going to make the dem party of pelosi, dean, hillary rodham. rangel, conyers a powerhouse.

Media takes their talking points right from the dems.

Culture of corruption, moderate hillary rodham.

I'm surprised bush's approval rating is 33 percent with the non stop msm bashing.

We are witnessing a left wing media coup of this country.

There is a direct correlation between Bush's poll numbers and the price of gasoline Therein lies Bush's problem. To voters, "The Economy" = Gas Prices. That's it. I live in a blue state, and after Iraq, the number one thing people at my workplace bash Bush over is gas prices. Every day, nonstop.

People like the Prez who have lived most of their lives behind the walls of privilege have no idea what we working stiffs face every day with gas prices, illegals in our cities, or anything else that threatens our daily way of life.

Thank you for your analysis of the numbers. Fox News is not a conservative network.....they have more conservative pundits. The closer we get to the November elections it won't be hard to figure out who is a Lib and who is a Conservative.

I don't know who the pollsters call....obviously they are uninformed.

Time to turn off Fox Snooze. It will be this poll and Duke wall to wall to wall. Neil will have FOX NEWS ALERT every 5 minutes on this poll. Brit will have his whole show on this poll. And this from the people who had Kerry by 5%.

...as long as the MSM has Crack Smoking Trixie with 10 kids that can't afford to get to her night job...

As I see it, the problem is that 90% of the population will associate themselves more with "Crack Smoking Trixie" then with Donald Trump. The average family income is sub-$50 grand a year. Most in the US work for a living; many are carrying a high debt load, most are worried about health care, jobs, and the rising costs of living. A party that forgets that will not remain in power for long.

The reason that the market went up in the last couple of days is April 17, the last day one could place $4,000 in a traditional IRA before the deadline. Billions were spent buying shares of mutual funds that buy stocks driving up the prices of the stocks. In a couple of weeks the prices will slide. Mark my words.

Over 12 million filers waited for the last day. It is because those 12 million are those who have to write a check to the treasury and because of that, they need to write a check to Fidelity or a similar investment house to offset income by investing in traditional IRAs.

"Apparently he also believes that lack of a secure border is what's best for our nation, at least judging by his actions instead of his rhetoric."

If he got the guest worker program he's looking for the border could be tightened. Then we could make sure that those coming in to work aren't criminals or terrorists.

Look, I'm not completely defending W. I'm just pointing out that he sticks to his beliefs, even when it angers many in his own party.

Supply and shipping has alot more to do with the actual price than the $/barrel does.

Supply at an eight year high, so much for that theory.
