The four teenaged punks who chased an NYU student into the path of an oncoming car looked and laughed as he lay on the street dying, a prosecutor revealed yesterday. "They didn't call for an ambulance. They didn't call for help. Rather, they stood on the street corner and laughed," prosecutor Joel Seidemann said of the 13- and 15-year-olds who chased Broderick John Hehman into traffic.

Hehman, 20, died four days later from his massive head injuries.

And the wolf-pack thugs, who allegedly laid in wait for their victim, could have even more to smile about now. Prosecutors lost their bid to try the teens as adults yesterday when their cases were transferred to Manhattan Family Court - where they face about half as much time behind bars if convicted of the top charge against them, felony murder.

Had they been tried as adults, the 15-year-olds would have faced nine years to life behind bars. Now, they face a maximum of five years in "restrictive placement," said Laurence Busching, head of the city Law Department's family court division.

If they're convicted of the lesser charges against them, including manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide, they could get off with as little as 18 months in juvenile detention.

Depends on the city. Where I live is great. The real problem is that 99% of city mayors are all either corrupt or incompetent hacks, and want to look like they're solving their city's problems by passing laws that ultimately take away my money and freedom. The problems that cities suffer (and cause) are mostly because of their leaders' socialist view of the world.

I heard on the news that it was three blacks and one Mexican. But this isn't a hate crime. Of course if it had been 4 white kids yelling "Get the XXXX guy" it would have been a hate crime and not a mere mugging attempt. It seem the very installment of the Hate Crime legislation was to "Get Whitey" so the boys were really just following the law.

Actually, New York is great if your're in the right neighborhood. Even this area is safe during the day, and relatively safe at night along the main avenues.

This kid was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Could happen just as easily in Toppenish, Washington as in Harlem.

These punks should be tried as adults. At 15 years old, I knew better than to, and had enough heart not to, thuggishly chase somebody into a busy street. Put them away now and save the tax dollars and innocent lives lost of doing so later.

My real point was that with lots of practice against realistic targets, one hardly needs a hi-cap piece to handle four punks...

All you hear out in the country are the horror stories,

What "country" is that? I live in northern Baltimore County, along the Pennsylvania border, and couldn't be happier. My nearest neighbor is about 3/4 miles from me - I can't see the next house when the cornfield out front grows. I don't panic when the kids don't come in at the exact time I expect them. Growing up, I lived in the suburbs of Baltimore City, in a somewhat affluent neighborhood. We had two cars stolen. There were assaults, robberies, vandalism... Where I am now, the only "horror stories" I hear about are usually gossip at the local store. Then again, there was a drug dealer last year who was brought out this way, shot, and left to burn in his vehicle. That one is getting some mileage. In short, if I'm residing in a "horror story," I hope it doesn't end.
