BENTON, Tenn. - A bear attacked a family at a camp site in the Cherokee National Forest on Thursday, killing a 6-year-old girl and injuring her 2-year-old brother and mother, authorities said.
The attack took place near a pool of water on Chilhowee Mountain, said Dan Hicks, spokesman for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
Witnesses described the bear picking up the boy in its mouth while the mother and other visitors tried to fend it off with sticks and rocks, Hicks said. The mother was injured before the bear was chased away.

That's why they freak me out ;~D
Yes on National park service property but this is national forest. Even on some National park property it is legal to process firearms. All the wild rivers under the wild river act is one of them.
They are legal in all the NF's I been in and that a lot from the east coast to the west and AK.
That is a false hood put out by the anti's black bear reagularly eat meat. They prey on the elk and deer fawns all the time. They well eat anything they can catch.
Obviuosly I need to educate myself.
That, and most CC weapons are medium caliber guns. One of those might just make a bear madder.
They're not the carnivores of the bear world.
Those would be the Polar Bears and Grizzlies that are the meat eaters.
But if black bears get hungry enough....they will eat meat.
Black bears are omnivorous.

I hope this is a hot link. If not, my apologies.
If you hike up any of the National Forest trails here in the High Sierra of California where I live, the Forest Service sign posts warn that if you carry a firearm it is to be used only in an emergency or during legal hunting season. It is only when you reach, say, the the crest of a trail in the wilderness and enter a National Park that you see signs saying "No firearms allowed."
It is legal in California to carry a holstered, loaded, handgun while you are camping on Forest Service (Federal) land.
I'll have to check - I currently live 10 miles over the border into OR.
I'm glad one can carry in National Forest. Sheer stupidity to disallow carrying in National Parks.
If they can or think they can they will take meat. Ask any sheep rancher in bear country. Using meat for bait is very common in lot of places. Here in Wis we are limited to other things no meat allowed.
That's exactly what my (9mm Glock) son said.
Sorry you are not completely correct. Cherokee National Forest falls under TWRA rules which states you cannot have a firearm unless it is for the legal purpose of hunting. so if you carry a firearm even with a firearm permit you are Illegal in Cherokee National forest. I've been trying to get this changed by changing TWRA legislation but it failed this year. Please write your TN legislature to allow people with firearm permits to carry in the national forest in Tennessee and write the Cherokee National forest and demand they also do this in their "Momorandum of Understanding" with the TWRA.
Update: A bear (possibly THE bear) was caught and killed. No rabies. Awaiting the necropsy for stomach contents. Paws seem to match prints at the attack site.
