Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

Yes, we've been sold out again. If you've been here illegally for 5 years or more you get amnesty, i.e. the longer the duration of your law breaking, the greater your reward.

Count me in on that sentiment. The GOP does better for us when they are a minority.

According to the link you provided, the Alexander amendment requires those wanting to be citizens to learn English - but taxpayers get to pay $500 for each one to help them with the naturalization requirements! Geez. They started out with something good - and again, the taxpayers get screwed!

Over the past 100 years, immigrants managed to become citizens without anyone having to pay money to help them. They had enough motivation to do it themselves, at their own expense.

I would like to thank Congress for working together to find a way to stab America in the back. Thank you for making citizenship worthless, you bunch of spineless rat bastards.

The only Senator that I ever liked was Jesse Helms. Since I don't live in North Carolina, I never had a chance to vote for him.

He kept the same modest house after so many years in Congress. He kept his ears open to his constituents always. He lived, ate, shopped and worked among his voters.

The rest of the Senators tend to live in a bubble.

People here for less than 2 years have to leave. That's a good first step.

Well, it may sound good, but if we don't have the will to enforce current long-standing laws, how and why will we suddenly start to enforce a less-than-two-years law? How do they even plan to determine who has been here and how long? Because they say they've been here for over 5 years? BOONDOOGLE! Betrayal!

That means getting 2 people to swear that they have known you for years. Just the same way that the terrorists got their DLs.

Amen! The GOP should be swiftly punished for this betrayal. The ONLY thing the GOP cares about is holding office, the only way to hold them accountable is to kick them out of office.

I would confine my criticism to the White House, a good portion of our Senators, and certain RINO traitors in the House.

But we need to remember that the House overall passed a good enforcement-only bill.

They're heroes in my book.

We've worked too hard for too many years to go throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Except some manage to create false documentation that secures them employment in nuclear facilities apparently. I'm not at all confident documentation will be closely checked. IMO, it's no more than a "save face" measure and they'll not look too closely deliberately.

I'm personally insulted more than outraged over this. I expect D.C. to sell us amnesty no matter the desires of the public. Why blow a fuse? As others are over the expected. Not good for my blodd pressure. :-)

But to insult mine and others intelligence so obviously? Tells me a great deal of how they view the public as being gullible.

In agreement.

I just wish IF they were going to propose amnesty, which we all knew, that they'd have the guts to admit it and NOT insult the public with this wording.

"My contention is that the economic "laws" are self fulfilling. Our immigration quota's and laws become obsolete within 1 quarter (of a year). The static rates that were established in 1986, and revised again in 1993, are simply market stifling. The reasons for the dot-com bust are many; but a major factor was the lack of tangible assets. Business plans based upon a marketing program, speculation, and projected earnings. So then real estate became a safe haven, along with the service and construction sectors. People wonder why immigrants (legal and illegal) flocked to the Home Depot parking lots. Duh. Home depot had been advertising for qualified contractors for over a year. There are now many Americans making great money contracting construction, landscaping, and home improvement through retailers such as Home Depot and Lowes. And some keyboard warriors here claim that Mexicans standing in front of these places are stupid. Those Mexicans saw the market for labor, and filled it. Meanwhile, down at the UAW union hall they were negotiating benefits for the $28.00 per hour lugnut installer. That lugnut installer could have started his own business and doubled his money to over $116k. I know two people that did this." People that are advocating changing laws ex-post facto, to make people felons had better make sure that they do not have any possible misdemeanors in their past (or their families past). Such law changes always have unintended consequences, such as requiring Americans to obtain exit visas for travel. Shortsighted, emotional rantings; especially when covered with racial hatred or incitement to violence have no place here.
