Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

Posted on 04/06/2006 8:33:43 AM PDT by STARWISE

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

No...what I mean is if:

They are in a mob numbering in the hundreds..
Shouting "Viva la Raza"...
Waving Mexican flags...
Burning American flags...

THEN I would hope it'd be obvious.

If the National Guard couldn't distinguish between their own countrymen and the enemy of all they stand for, then we're blued, screwed, and tattooed.

Not on my dime.

So private property has nothing to do with it - you just don't want a wall built with government funds.

Why not just come out and say that you're open border? Why all of the red herrings?

Thanks for nothing, Senator Frist, and believe me, you can kiss your presidential aspirations good-bye, because the base will now desert you in vast numbers. And trust me, that is exactly what is going to happen

Frist is such an idiot to believe he can win the nomination to be President! Wow, that was a passionate, well written, and inspiring email. These are indeed dark days for our Republic. Somehow, somewhere, a true Warrior leader must rise to inspire the citizens of this once great Republic to face reality and fight to restore obedience to the Constitution and the principle of very, very minimal government... Sadly, that somewhere will only be in a novel, or a Mel Gibson movie. Damn Frist and all the other RINO's. They have failed the Constitution, they have failed us and failed those who follow. This is indeed a watershed moment in US History. The left and PC crowd will have their Socialist paradise they so desire -- It will be hell for those who produce.

If someone in the federal government can provide a landowner with a compelling reason to finance the building of a wall on their property, as long as the county commissioners request a variance with input from every taxpayer and landowner that would be impacted; no skin off of me. Good luck with that happening in Texas.
Private property has everything to do with it. With the full quote, it is not a red herring. I do not want it done on my dime, and the private property rights must be respected. If you choose to advocate building an economic barrier with government funds, I can recognize that stance. I will fight against it, but recognize it.

Walls are not economic barriers.

Unless you think preventing uneducated, unskilled, labor-intensive, non-taxpaying employees from entering the United States will hinder our economy.

Considering the other wacky economic views propounded by the economically illiterate FROBLs on this thread that belief wouldn't surprise me, to be quite honest.

Perhaps.

I agree with Wardaddy, though.

Jorge, Areal, Sinky, etc., need to dispense with the pretense that they are conservatives-or are contributing to anything to a conservative website-and join their pinko buddies in ANSWER, NION, and the United Farm Workers, and start lobbying for this atrocious bill.

They're not fooling anyone here, that's for sure.

"Walls are not economic barriers." If you say so.
http://www.wall-berlin.org/gb/ciel.htm
Europe, China, and every other country that has had (note the past tense) walls disagrees. I am still anticipating the link that proves that only God fearin' Americans pay taxes. This link shows that a whole gob of them durned feriners pay taxes:

Repeating rhetoric does not make it factual.

A nice email indeed. Well constructed emails are going to lead to nothing but the end. We need to get into the street. I don't know how to organize that, as most here. But it needs to happen either before 5-1 or a few days following. And I'll fly anywhere I have to, to particpate in the most angry way.

HEY! You left me off of the pinko list. What is up with that? My outrageous behavior in the defense of civil liberties and the fourth amendment mandates that you castigate me as an enemy of yours. Dang. No respect.

So what you are saying is that you do not believe in borders at all. After all, a border is nothing more than a virtual wall that can only be crossed with the permission of the territory you are entering.

Try to enter Mexico from the south illegally and see how much they believe in open borders. Try to sneak into Japan and see how well it goes as well.

Sorry, but you're just plain nuts. You only defended the 4th amendment when it could be applied to protecting illegals.

Unless you are actually an illegal or married to one, I really feel bad for your reasoning ability.

I agree that emails mean nothing but going to the street isn't going to happen. The only way to fix this is to kick the GOP senators out of office.

The GOP senators should know that people marching in streets due to the Iraq war demonstrations. The anti-war street protests dwarfed an pro-war rally but in the end, the pro-war lobby were the ones that turned out to vote.

Walls and fences work! If they didn't, then we would not have them around the White House, our military bases or our homes.

Anyone that claims walls and fences don't work is lying, delusional or both.

Haven't you heard? Those are actually economic barriers and the people of Texas are dead set against sealing the border.

I defend the fourth as it applies to all people. Even drunk drivers that you support. Litterbugs, smokers, drunks, and murderers all deserve equal protection under the law. I have a hard time moving a resident alien up to the level of murderer. I can agree on trespasser and litterbug if they are caught and granted due process. I will never agree to infringements of everyones rights to crack down on trespassers and litterbugs.
