Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

"From a thread that got pulled a minute ago: "So far I've only heard that illegal immigrants here less than 2 years have to leave.""

Any amount of time is too long. And just how do you prove how long they have been here? That will be interesting.

Q. How long have you been here?

A. Longer than 2 years

Q. Show us your pay stubs?

A. What pay stubs?

This is a joke. How about telling them that if they leave now and don't get caught here then they may be able to come back as a legitimate(documented) guest worker. But if they get caught here illegally then they can never come here again. That would get a bunch of them to go home.

LOL.

That reminds me of the song.

Not the sappy, maudlin original by Morris Albert, but the cover by The Offspring.

Nothing more than feelings Trying to forget my Feelings of hate

Trying to forget my Feelings of hate

Feelings For all my life, I’ll feel it I wish I’d never met you You’ll make me sick again

Feelings Whoa, feelings Whoa, feelings Of hate on my mind

Feelings like I gotta get you Out of my life

Whenever I see John McCain stumble up to the lectern in front of those C-SPAN cameras that song pops into my head.

Are either of you accusing the President of the United States of "treason"?

No, I'm not accusing Bush of treason and also know that you have not seen anything I have posted that would come close to what you imply. I wish you could stick to the issue. You have talked to me more about "impeaching Bush" and "treason" more than you have about illegal aliens. I'm beginning to suspect you are a DUer. LOL I voted for Bush both terms. I happen to not agree with him on Amnesty to illegals. If you think that is the definition of "treason" so be it. It's not mine.

Then you're not doing a good job of expressing yourself as everyone else in this thread is reading your views on the wall the same way as I am.

If you actually spent the time reading the post your replying to, I wouldn't have to waste time repeating myself.

To be clear, would a wall that did not stop 100% of illegal immigration be of any value?

I think I made myself clear. You are the one who said I said it would be useless. I said it would SLOW the flow, not STOP the flow.

You believe that if you jolt the public with a Rat for 6 years, then the GOP will be eager to get you and other real conservatives on board next time.

Recent history backs up this assertion. It's not that we want expect to "jolt the public" with a democrat - the idea is to show Republicans that they have to actually govern as conservatives to get elected.

If Democrat-Lite Republicans in conservative states start getting knocked off then the rest of them will learn their lesson.

The policy you advocate is akin to a wife not upsetting her abusive husband for fear that he will get even more abusive.

the illegals working at Farmer Bill's are not committing a felony crime (though Farmer Bill is by hiring them)
As much as you wish it were so, it is not. While you are so busy rewriting civil laws, and determining punishment; please enlighten all of us as to when you will bring back debtors prison, and which civil infractions should bring the death penalty.

Unless you're saying that the terrorist who launched the RPG attack got over the wall himself

Why does he have to scale the wall to use his RPG?

"Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles provided evidence of the emotion it has generated from 3,000 miles away when he urged Catholics to pray for passage of legislation allowing illegal immigrants to gain citizenship. The debate marks "one of the most critical weeks in the history of our country," he said."

Not on your life, "Cardinal." Most Catholics disagree with you!

My point exactly. We're not dealing with RPG's being launched from Mexico.

My definition of "treason" is the same as the law's - I didn't mean to "imply" anything - I was asking a question. I certainly did not "imply" anywhere close to your "beginning to suspect" I am a DUmmy ; )

As the old saying goes, a waste is a terrible thing to mind. Those that are for illegal immigration do not use logic and reason to make their points. The fact is that up till about 1990, most jobs that illegals now dfod were done by American citizens. As we know, when illegals flooded these industries, wages dropped and benifits vanished.

You are the one who said I said it would be useless. I said it would SLOW the flow, not STOP the flow.

That is what everyone has been posting to you for the last half an hour. Post after post to you has stated that a wall that even slows down illegal immigration would be of value.

To those posts, you've replied over and over again that walls are not inpenetratable. No one has said that they were so it is not clear why you are even making that statement if it has no point.

It's as absurd as trying to convince some FROBL that importing 20+ million people from backwater, economically undeveloped, third world nations is a wise idea.

You're the master of putting words in other people's mouths.

Who in hell said it was "wise"? We just differ in what to do about it.

You set up strawmen so that you can demagogue. Just like I said.

The govenment claim has been that they can't possibly deport. Therfore, I want to know, whose going to oversee the above?
