Congress Nears Deal on Illegal Immigrants (breaking on cable networks)
AP/Yahoo News ^ | 4-6-06 | DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON - In a last stab at compromise, Senate Republicans and Democrats reported progress Thursday toward agreement on legislation opening the way to legal status and eventual citizenship for many of the 11 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

"There's been tremendous progress overnight," said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, the Democratic leader, while Majority Leader Bill Frist also expressed optimism that a long-sought compromise might be at hand.

There was no immediate reaction from President Bush, who has made immigration legislation a key priority.

The developments occurred after Frist unveiled a new bill late Wednesday night on the subject as the Senate headed into a test vote on the most sweeping immigration bill in two decades.

In general, the legislation would provide for enhanced border security, regulate the flow of future immigrants into the United States and settle the legal fate of the estimated 11 million men, women and children already in the country.

It was the fate of the illegal immigrant population that proved hardest to legislate, and it has left the Senate on the verge of gridlock for days.

(snip)

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., as well as other key senators met before the vote to review terms of a proposed compromise.

In general, it would require illegal immigrants who have been in the United States between two years and five years to return to their home country briefly, then re-enter as temporary workers. They could then begin a process of seeking citizenship.

Illegal immigrants here longer than five years would not be required to return home; those in the country less than two years would be required to leave without assurances of returning, and take their place in line with others seeking entry papers.

Why doesn't it surprise me that you went to graduate school?

Only someone like you could be this dense.

Look, these people are not here to assimilate.

Those 20-30 million people that will be granted citizenship by this egregiously stupid bill are not interested in preserving any vestiges of American citizenship, and they could care less whether or not you speak Spanish.

That is a demand, a prerequisite, for surviving in this new society of ours, not a preference.

a very real possibility of economic disaster.

Gloom and doom scaremongering.

The U.S. lost three million manufacturing jobs in the last five years.

135,000 marginal service industry jobs is barely a blip in a workforce of 150 million.

If economic darwinism is good enough for manufacturing workers then it should also apply to the owner of a burger joint, lawn service or roofing company.

They can't compete legally? Too bad. Someone else will come along who can.

I admit it seems like a low standard to meet, but when you think that 100 years prior, they were SLAVES - not so bad really.

You really are a jerk, troll.

The illegals are as you said headed straight for our welfare system after years of cleaning toilets they are going to expect pay back. Look at Europe. Most of the people on welfare their are 2nd, 3rd generation. Their parents or grandparents came in as low wage workers acheived amnesty and the rest is history. We'll end up with riots in the street thanks to Bush, Spector, McCain, extra weasel mouse Lindsey Graham, and Kerry and the other pathetic American hating Demoncats.

"How are all the illegals who became citizens under Reagan's amnesty voting?"

Good question. How about doing your own research and getting back to us?

I know one personally, and he doesn't vote at all. He's collected quite a bit of welfare-state benefits in the last 20 years, though.

He's smart as a fox. He's a Communist Democrat that would love to run the Senate under a President Hitlery Administration - and Republican leadership seems keen on the idea as near as I can put it all together.

You should all read the piece from mac Johnson today on www.americanthinker.com.

He basically says, do as you do with drug dealers. Confiscate all of the belongings of the Illegals here, house, car, bank accounts. When those here illegally get wind of this they will fly back to their home country's with all of the posessions they can gather rather than have them taken.

This is all treasonous baloney.

There's no way to monitor the process and they'll allow the amnesty before the borders are secured -- promptly millions more to trudge across the borders to cut the grass that the 0-10 year amnestees just won't do themselves. Further, there's NO PUNISHMENT for breaking the law. So, this is a signal to the legitimite visa and residency-permit people to jump the line -- JUMPING THE LINE PAYS EVERTIME.

The House and Sentate believe in "pushing paper" documents as an indication of success, not real results. This the end of the GOP and perhaps America as we know it. We're importing poverty... poverty people to support the poverty party. The Democrats will pick up the majority of these votes as the Democrats can out-pander the Republicans (OK, just barely).

I'll be switching from GOP to Constitutional Party, and vote for Tancredo if he runs for President. No more Republican support from me. No more "vote for the lesser of the evils" because the lesser of the evils has done just as much to damage the U.S. as the other socialist party.

There will be further damage to the U.S. dollar as it is now clear that there is no longer the rule of law in the U.S.

Without going into unemployment, abortion, unwed parent, drug abuse, drop-out, etc. statistics, your analogy is disturbing, too, since after a horrifying 4 year civil war and nearly a hundred fifty years of strife that group of Americans remains to be fully assimilated into our society.

Check out Thomas Sowell's, `Red neck Blacks and White Liberals'.
Not sure about title, I read it quite a while ago.

If we're looking into something similar with Mexican-Americans, just damn.

"there's NO POSSIBLE WAY it could be worse than how far blacks were able to come"

This is proof positive of your lack of historical knowledge, clawrence3.

As I mentioned previously, some of my ancestors were Irish. They came here to escape the Potato Famine of the mid-1850s, and many died alongside the Chinese laborers who built the railroads at that time.

Slaves were not used for this, because slaves were worth something. The Chinese and the Irish, on the other hand, were considered expendable.

If under the current system we're not kicking them out, how will amnesty make it any worse?

Perhaps you can understand some psychology, as applied to children. When you set a curfew, or other rule for your teen, and they break it, would continued "amnesty" for any consequences teach the teen to stop breaking the curfew? No, so why have a curfew if it's not enforced? Would you reward your toddler with cookies when he/she hits their sibling after you had told them "don't hit"? No, so why bother having a rule against hitting if you reward them for that very behavior?

Repeated amnesty emboldens and encourages even more illegals to come into this country because they already know that if they can't get it this time, there's another one down the road and in the meantime, they've been "taught" they can ignore the immigration U.S. rules/laws with impunity. And if those laws can be ignored.....maybe they can ignore all the other laws they choose.

When rewards are given out after rules/laws are broken, it encourages more of the very thing the rule/law was put in place to stop.

What's the logic is that kind of system?

Considering NO OTHER GROUP in world history has gone as far as fast from slavery to freedom - I'm not saying we can't improve more - but, how exactly is pointing that fact out wrong?

" 2 years in country - How many of them and how will we get them out of the country?"

This is such a joke!!! Illegals will use illegal methods to remain in this country. How do you prove they have only been here 2 years or less.

Who the heck are they trying to fool? This ain't nothin but a rotten bill of goods.

Besides, magically over the last year or so, the government has been hammering the "11 million" illegals statistic rather than the 18 to 20 million reported over the last several years.

This is such a sham of the worst order. It will just encourage more illegals and more lawlessness.

We are already paying for them!

What does it take for this elementary concept to penetrate that thick skull of yours, which seems to be impenetrable to even the most rudimentary of facts and/or logic?

In the form of public education, home loans, Pell Grants, AFDC, Medicaid, SSI, WIC, food stamps, the billions in untaxed remittances that they are diverting from our economy, etc., etc., ad nauseam.

Stop with this "Americans are too damn lazy to do anything" pap.

I'm tired of it!

Americans are sick of being condescended to by nitwits like you and Clarence, and your political icons, John McLame and Lyndsay "Goober" Graham.

They know the truth, and no amount of spin from you apologists for criminality is going to change that one iota.
