DICK MORRIS - "Suddenly it's a race" (Spencer vs. Hillary)
NY POST ^ | 4/6/06 | Dick Morris

Posted on 04/06/2006 4:23:10 AM PDT by nycfree

HILLARY VS. HILLARY April 6, 2006 -- HILLARY may need to break into a sweat after all.

In the wake of Jeanine Pirro's awkward withdrawal from the race, many assumed that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's only re-election challenge would be trying to beat the New York blowout record set by Sen. Chuck Schumer in 2004. But the latest poll by John Zogby indicates that Hillary suddenly has a food fight on her hands.

In his first poll after Pirro dropped out on Jan. 13, Zogby had Hillary ahead of GOP challenger John Spencer by 61 percent to 31 percent. But in his most recent survey, conducted March 27, her margin had fallen to 54-33.

Hillary's drop did not reflect any aggressive paid media push by Spencer. He has yet to run his first ad. Rather, Hillary is losing the key contest of Hillary vs. Hillary - her negatives are rising.

In New York City, she dropped from a 68-19 lead to 62-25. In the suburbs, she fell from 55-36 to 48-41. Upstate, her edge went from 57-38 to 43-42.

Suddenly, it's a race.

Animating Hillary's drop are losses on all ends of the political spectrum. She's down by six points among Democrats, and by 12 with Republcians. But her key falloff is among independents - from 64 percent to 49 percent.

This dose of negative poll data may well prompt the Clinton campaign to dip into her her vast war chest to go on-air with ads. But if Spencer raises the money his current standing in the polls deserves, he'll be able to counter Hillary and erode her lead further.

This race is a waste of time for the GOP. EVERY dollar that was to go to the NY GOP nominee should be sent to a race where we have a good chance of winning.

Every seat in the Senate is of equal value - I'd rather lose this one in NY and be able to pick up another one somewhere else than pour money into NY and lose them both.

She's down by six points among Democrats, and by 12 with Republicans.

Did she actually have that much support among Republicans that she could lose 12%?

Well Think Morris is brilliant.

But this is proof that even the smartest ought to keep their mouths closed sometimes! 55-33!!! That's a Landslide!

Maybe some editor tinkered with Morris' Headline?

Those are the Republicans who promise not to vote at all because they don't think her opponent is conservative enough.

I think Morris is a smart guy -- genuinely. But his newspaper column is strictly fodder for the masses. If you want to know what he really thinks, you have to pay big bucks.

Add 10 pts to the Ziggy numbers and you have the true picture. She is a horrible campaigner and can lose this one.

is easy now to look back and say that Hillary ran for Senate in 2000 in order to set up a presidential bid. But, in 2000, very few voters would have believed that she was going to run for president.

Morris must have smoked his underwear before he wrote that.

Sometimes a race is not about who win (like perhaps in this case), but about perception and expectation. If Hillary win only by one digit margin in NY, it would shatter the assumption that she's untouchable, and may alter her status as 'front-runner' in Democratic primary

If she lost the race in NY, her Presidential aspirations would be Kaput.

Spencer should be given enough money to run a credible campaign, in my opinion. (Or whoever ends up being the nominee.) Not funding a candidate indicates weakness and it demoralizes New York Republicans.

While I agree that expensive TV ads late in a campaign when a nominee is 20 points behind are a waste of money, early funding and support of the national party are important. I also like forcing Hillary to spend money.

So, I agree with you.

With a Republican governor and Republican mayors in NY I don't think this is such a blue state. Anyway, there is a red state inside every blue state and visa versa. What I do worry about is the antique, very fixable voting machines in NYC.

Who is John Spencer? He's running against Hillary, yeah, but can someone give me a thumbnail of the guy? BTW, Dick Morris despises Hillary and would do anything to knock her down a peg. He wants Condi Rice to run against Hillary if Hill is nominated, and beat her. And I believe he wrote and is hawking a book about that scenario.

Hey it's worth 10-20 bucks to see if we can pull this off. This is the house falling on her.

He does not have to win, to "win". She can be shown as the evil that she is. She can be damaged beyond repair.

I wish I could excited about this but it's not going to happen. NY is not going to elect a Republican Senator. Period. Upstate is losing population in droves and NYC has a 6 to 1 Democrat edge. Once D'Amato lost...the writing was on the wall. The Security issue in the wake of 9/11 bought us some time with the Independents and allowed Pataki to squeak by in 2002.

Make Hillary spend money, yes. But as much as I want to believe we have a shot at winning, I'm not going to allow myself to be delusional.

Then how do you explain the NYS Conservative party's abandonment of Lazio in '00?

The following remarks are aimed only to those with an open mind. If you are one of those who are comfortable as a naysayer, crying "We can't beat her! We can't beat her!"
Save your time and go to another post.
Now if you have an open mind let me point something out:
In 2000 the beast got away with lying to the people upstate. She told them she would save the economy up there and that she cared about them. THEY WERE THE ONES who elected her. Lazio might have withstood the vote in NYC IF he had normal Republican support upstate. She did only win with 55%. So what does this all mean for Spencer? He is still not in the position he needs to be in to possibly win, but this does put him closer to where he needs to be.

It is ironic that zombie, a guy who is demonstrably wrong so often is the the guy who is causing the rat so much grief on this one. The rat dare not attack zombie because he lies so well for them. They just have to smile and move on. ( pun intended)

Bloomberg is NO Republican! He changed his affilliation to R because there was no viable candidate for the office in the GOP. This way he avoided the Dem. primary fight.
