NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Entertainer Bill Cosby urged New Orleans' black population on Saturday to cleanse itself of a culture of crime as it rebuilds from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina last year.
Cosby, whose criticism of some aspects of modern African-American culture has stirred controversy in recent years, told a rally headed by black leaders that the city needed to look at the "wound" it had before Katrina struck.
"It's painful, but we can't cleanse ourselves unless we look at the wound," Cosby told the rally of about 2,000 people in front of the city's convention center.

Rather, the question should be, why is the Media not pointing this out?
To tell the truth these days is a revolutionary act.
addressing black problems blacks had to address to get their lives back in order again.
There, I fixed it.
Just be thankful he is saying it.
The last time Bill Cosby started shooting his mouth off about 'black' problems, he had 16 women come forward saying he had raped them. Note to Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton: 1 or 2 accusations of rape is a smear job - 16 accusations of rape is simply unbelievable.
Hopefully, the 'black community' will listen to Bill this time.
You have my sympathy. I've been hearing reports about what has happened to the schools in the Houston area.
Dr. Cosby doesn't blame life's troubles on "the man." Makes him a bit out of place among the pimp crowd.
Did anyone see Lauren Lake (black female apologist) on O'Reilly debating John Kasich??
Kasich was quoting Cosby, talking about black-on-black murder, black dropout rates, young black girls getting pregnant...
She basically blamed society (Surprise, Surprise). It was almost as if she was saying..."That's right, and until you white people step in and do something about it, we're gonna keep on keepin' on".
I guess she thinks that society gives blacks no other choice but to kill each other, and that blacks are incapable of restraining themselves.
Truly bizarre.
"Ladies and gentlemen, you had the highest murder rate, unto each other.
You were dealing drugs to each other.
You were impregnating our 13-, 12-, 11-year-old children," he said.
"What kind of a village is that?"
The Revs Al and Jesse love to blame someone else for their own problems and then demand reparations.
Cosby:"You see, when you bust a brother in the head, you don't always check to make sure it ain't a rich brother like us. You need to pay more attention to that detail. "
Sharpton: "Hurry up, Bill. If I stay in this heat much longer, I'm going to turn from Cab Calloway to Angela Davis. You there. Officer, please check that young man there for a weapon. He is wearing too much jewelry"
I don't know why anyone would be surprised, this has been Cosby's theme for years now.
Bill Cosby politically incorrect at bash celebrating Brown v. Board of Education
"Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal," he declared. "These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids -- $500 sneakers for what? And won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.' . . .
"They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English," he exclaimed. "I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' . . . And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. . . . Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. . . . You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!"
The Post's Hamil Harris reports that Cosby also turned his wrath to "the incarcerated," saying: "These are not political criminals. These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged, [saying] 'The cops shouldn't have shot him.' What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?"
Ditto. I've a question, as well. "...the rally of about 2,000 people IN FRONT of the city's convention center."
They wouldn't let them inside?
Yes, I saw Lauren Lake. She epitomizes what is wrong in the black "community." She is a bitter woman who is not using her intelligence. She offered no solutions, just excuses.
I firmly believe that, by and large, blacks are more racist than whites. (gasp!)
It's because there is no housing down here. There are jobs. And they are paying extremely well. And if one were to take a job, then one could theoretically afford housing. But there is no housing to be had.
So unless these folks can get a FEMA trailer somewhere, they've got nowhere to live here, and therefore, there is little incentive to work here. The people who actually are here an not working, on the other hand, simply have no excuse.
Cosby is giving a good message. Too bad he's an "Uncle Tom" to the low-lifes such as Jackson, King and Farrakhan.
I like Bill.
They aren't working because they are used to sitting on their backsides getting our tax money to but their groceries. A leech won't let go if you keep pumping blood into it.
To paraphrase one of Dr. Cosby's first (and I think funniest) albums:
"Bill Cosby is a Very SMART Fellow... RIGHT!"
Have you ever read a biography on Dr. Ben Carson? When he was doing poorly in school, his mother made him go to the library after school and do book reports for her on top of his school work. I believe his mother worked a couple of jobs to make ends meet. Ben Carson went from the bottom of his class to the top -- and has been a pediatric neurosurgeon (Brain Surgeon!) at Johns Hopkins for over 20 years.
James Earl Jones was born in Mississippi . . . during the Depression. He had a speech impediment, but now he's known for his wonderful acting and incomparable voice work. Talk about overcoming obstacles.
I find it sad that when a black man or woman achieves this kind of success, they are often called "Oreos" or "Uncle Toms." I'm glad that Mr. Cosby has the courage to speak the truth in love where a person of any other race would not dare.
I believe the entitlement philosophy of the Democratic Party has substantially weakened many Americans of all races.
