In all its cacophony and moments of absurdity, this morning's Today show segment on immigration was a supremely edifying example of the confusion, high emotion and complexity of the immigration debate. Matters reached their Alice-in-Wonderland apotheosis when Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California was shown in a Senate committee arguing that illegal immigrants are good . . . 'citizens.' Said Feinstein:
"They pay taxes, their children are Americans, they go to schools, they're good citizens and they're needed."
This was in line with the fait accompli argument advanced by La Raza representative Janet Murguia. She referred to what she estimated as the 11-12 million illegal aliens in the country as "people are working in backbreaking work that nobody else wants to do in this country. We need to . . . understand that they are already part of this country."

I thought about Democrats as more adept in propaganda than Republicans. But looks like they could not control it (even if they tried, who knows?!): all the Mexican flags make a statement on their own. Everything I wanted to know about these demonstrations I got from the first glance at waving flags. They don't want to be Americans. Case closed.
I am a naturalized American; American first and all my other sympathies and native language second. These guys are Mexicans.
The problem is simpler than many people think. Seal the border completely. After that we can find a solution what to do with all illegals already here. A reasonable compromise can be found, but only AFTER the borders are sealed. To me, there is no point even to discuss the second step until we make the first one.
Politically speaking it is a big blow to Democrats. When you say that any discussion about national security is beneficial to Republicans: even counting all the mistakes, they are still seen as preferable on the subject - similar can be said on the illegal immigration. Clear and large majority of Americans is against it, and Democrats are associated with it more than Republicans. The more the MSM shows this enormous 500 thousands demonstration, the more they get the opposite effect from the people watching it.
I pointed this out in another thread. I cannot for the life of me understand why the US confers citizenship on children of illegal aliens.
In the years ahead, if there is ever a reason for a draft, any child of illegal aliens that got his citizenship at birth can claim exemption from the draft. While we confer citizenship on someone, we cannot force them to accept it. All they will have to do is tell the US that they have no jurisdiction over them because their parents were not citizens at their birth. It's like a Catch-22 - we made them citizens and say we have to give them all the rights of citizens, but they don't have to accept the obligations of a citizen because we have no jurisdiction over them. I'm sure this could also be applied to other things like jury duty.
What B.S. Depends where you buy your funiture I guess. I don't buy any Chinese/Indonesian furniture.
They lost the company because they wern't competitive, they didn't modernize. Too bad. But some did, and they are still in business.
The lumber tariffs go directly to American lumber companies.
This resulted in a 30% direct cost passed on to American consumers. It caused the cost of housing to skyrocket as well. I suppose that houses are built in china too? Blame it on free trade if you like. keep that head in the sand. The company simply moved across the border, and put 250 people out of work.
Oh, that's very interesting. And, so is that sign.
I've got news for some of those people who are say, "all they want is to become Americans." BULL! They want to stay Mexicans (or whatever other country they come from) but want to come and roll in the fruits of the labors of our hardworking Americans.
I always knew that when the U.S. fell it would be from the inside out! Look how many we have working against us! This is a sure sign.
Illegal aliens are now "citizens", huh?
Yep, that's exactly what I expect from some scumbag Californiia Senator.
Illegals, which comprise the lowest castes in Mexico, have the least amount of Spanish blood, and the most amount of Indian blood, other than pure blood Indians (which, incidentally, are the lowest caste in Mexico).
Therefore, they see this as their land prior to 1492. As I recall, some of the signs supported that notion by declaring Columbus the original illegal alien.
let's just bulldoze the place, turn it back into a useless desert and "give it back" to them. They can "prosper" all they want in the sand box that it was before WE built it into something.
The reality it was never theirs, Those people never lived anywhere near the place, and it was nothing before we turning it into something. These ignorant Mexicans have a lot of nerve. No wonder their country is such a crap hole. The stupidity is genetic.
let's just bulldoze the place, turn it back into a useless desert and "give it back" to them.
Got a point! If they were so great at it maybe Mexico would be a better place.
Good points. In fact, all of what now passes for California and Arizona was "Mexican" for a grand total of about 30 years, and while I admit I don't know the actual population, I'd guess that the whole of Mexican-southwest U.S. at the time was less than the population of, say, New York.
Well, then you are simply reading the TRUE "free trade" crowd wrong: Adam Smith was a "free trader," but he insisted on national security and having a big navy, and profits never trump security, because without security, your profits are not secure. Ask the oil companies who did business in Mexico.
Fascinating. I'm going to send the link on to my co-author, who does more of the "social history." He will greatly appreciate this.
I just heard some legislative type on Tony Snow who was saying 'It isn't feasible to deport 11 million at a cost of (x . . . couldn't hear)." My response is, you don't have to deport all of them immediately, but you MUST get a start on it as a deterrent to others. Then you must make it impossible for anyone to hire an illegal. I used to be a little more lenient with business---not anymore. No valid driver's license (and illegals don't get them!), no job.
I agree with you 100%. Enough is enough.
You have hit the nail on the head the press never questions how she keeps getting relected.
The full sentence was:
"They pay taxes, their children are Americans, they go to schools, they're good citizens and they're needed."
The first "they" obviously refers to the illegals. Everything after "their children" refers to the children of the illegals, including the part about being good citizens.
The only reference to the illegals themselves was "they pay taxes". Feinstein didn't say they were "good citizens".

Lou Dobbs isn't consistently conservative - or liberal. He seems to have varying views.
