KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Senior Muslim clerics are demanding that an Afghan man on trial for converting from Islam to Christianity be executed, warning that if the government caves in to Western pressure and frees him, they will incite people to "pull him into pieces."
In an unusual move, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice telephoned President Hamid Karzai on Thursday seeking a "favorable resolution" of the case of Abdul Rahman. The 41-year-old former medical aid worker faces the death penalty under Afghanistan's Islamic laws for becoming a Christian.
His trial has fired passions in this conservative Muslim nation and highlighted a conflict of values between Afghanistan and its Western backers.
"Rejecting Islam is insulting God. We will not allow God to be humiliated. This man must die," said cleric Abdul Raoulf, who is considered a moderate and was jailed three times for opposing the Taliban before the hard-line regime was ousted in 2001.

Afghan supreme court judge Ansarullah Mawlavezada holds a Bible he says belongs to Abdul Rahman.
I appreciate his integrity, but he may want to consider moving.
Where have all the good redneck or skinhead Muslims gone? It says much about a religion that is afraid for their beliefs to be challenged. They have to know how weak it is when scrutinized by others. Hell awaits.
And what is it my liberal acquaintences say?
"islam is just a religion, no different from Catholocism. muslims are good people, we just need to leave them alone."
I pray to God every one of them reads this story and starts to understand what is going on. muslims are raised to be violent. muslims embrace death and worship violence. muslims see violence the same way leftists see negotiation, the only legitimate way to resolve a dispute. islam is a death cult, and they have declared war on us.
Whoever put these guys in charge are as crazy as they are.
The picture of this wonderful Christian man makes him look a little nuts.
I just can't imagine why CNN would want to leave us with that impression...
Projecting their own humiliation onto God -- an Islamic pastime.
You'de have to be a little nuts to do what's he's doing where he's doing it. I figure they may be onto something :).
Right now, I'd say that we non-Musliims have plenty reason to "look at Muslims with suspicion" for very, very good reason.
Adbul Rahman looks rather beatific in that picture.
If they complained, I'd put panties on their heads. Then we'd talk.
This man is not really a Christian, he is a Muslim. This is just a ploy to plot the west agaist Islam to icite a Jihad or (religious war) this is what terrorist want. This man is just a tool, be used to build tension amongst the west. The same could be said about the Muhammad Cartoons. We must wake up.....
How do you know he's a wonderful man?
Not to sould cliche, but kill em all and let god sort em out.....
Sources please.
However raping a woman because her brother broke a law isn't humilitating to God. Strapping a bomb on your body, blowing yourself up and murdering others in the process isn't humilitating God.
I know as a Christian I'm not to judge what is in the hearts of others, God help me because I can't stop judging in these cases.
Perhaps the US needs to get this man the heck out of Afghanistan as soon as he is freed.
If the Afghanis want to call it mental illness, then so be it. IMHO, wanted to put someone to death for converting to another religion is a sign of mental illness too.
Spring the guy, bring him to the US, and let him practice Christianity. There should be plenty of churches who would be willing to sponsor someone who cares enough for his religion to die for it. (Notice I said to DIE for it - not to KILL for it.)
I guess as a "moderate" his mindset is firmly planted in the 9th Century. That would have to mean that the "hardliners" would be stuck in the 7th.
