OCALA, Fla. -- A Florida judge said a plea deal for a Tampa teacher accused of having sex with a 14-year-old would "erode public confidence in" schools.
Marion County Circuit Judge Hale Stencil has rejected the plea deal for Debra Lafave, 25. The judge said the deal would undermine the credibility of the criminal justice system.
Prosecutors and the defense lawyer had urged the judge to accept the deal for the good of the boy. A psychiatrist told the judge the boy suffered extreme anxiety because of intense media coverage of the case and does not want to testify.
Lafave was charged in two counties where she's accused of having sex with the student.
A judge in Hillsborough County accepted a plea deal there in November and sentenced Lafave to three years of house arrest and seven years' probation. She pleaded guilty in November to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery for having sex with the boy in a classroom and her home.
I was a 14 year old boy once and I will not pretend for a second that if a teacher who looked like this offered to have sex with me that I wouldn't have been tempted. In fact, I think there is a very good chance that I would have done it. However, I would have also known it was wrong. It is unfortunate that many see this as some sort of "victimless" crime.
Of course he would feel different. The double standard is alive and well on FR.
What I don't understand about teachers of ANY gender having sex with kids is:Why would you be so STUPID?Teaching jobs are not easy to get nowadays and you will have wasted five+years of education and a felony conviction that will hamper you the rest of your life.
;)
hormonaly=hormonal Ah. I thought you meant "hornormaly".
I would have thought with my pig-like take on this, that would be obvious. ;-)
I'm a guy, to state it outright.
I have 2 kids, a 14 year old daughter and a 9 year old son. *He* would have gotten in trouble from me, had this been my son -- because she was married, and he was not planning to marry her.
But I don't see how the kid is a victim here.
Exactly.
Calling this kid a 'victim' really turns that word on it's head.
So to speak . . .
Thank you.
When you become a Christian, you will feel ashamed.
Watch out for the cannibals, though.
"Already Happening in Canada"
I understand this to say Michigan.
she is LIVE on FNC now - claiming "illness", thanking people, offering apologizes, she is in therapy, etc, etc.
let's move on - she says.
no talk of her Playboy spread and upcoming DVD.
He is victimized.
I can vouch for that. Crazy wimmins sometimes even bring their crazy wimmen friends along to help.
(Hair Dressers are all crazy)
Again, I agree re: disease and parent-hood.
But I do *not* agree re: psychological problems.
Just my opinion -- but this kid, and kids in his situation, would not likely be affected psychologically. I would let my daughter date him, assuming he's the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ (the only person good enough for my girl :-) ).
Again, YMMV. But I don't agree there was any danger of psychological damage.
"Ive been a guy for quite some time, and so I am somewhat of an authority on this, and boys only regret liasons with ugly girls, and then only if their friends find out."
I am just as much a guy as the next one. Screwed around a lot in HS/College/Army.
As a mature male, however, I have gotten religious training, and recognize premarital sex is a sin, and I do regret what I did.
I may be the exception in regretting that.
But the boy, at 14, should have the chance to be the exception without regrets.
I personally don't know how ANY red-blooded guy could resist.
Now if the judge would just release her into my custody ...
If you mean with sex out of wedlock, or with a married woman -- agreed.
But that isn't why this is against the law.
I'm referring to the fact that she was older, and his teacher.
