AUSTIN -- The reigning Miss Deaf Texas died Monday afternoon after being struck by a train in Austin.
Authorities said 18-year-old Tara Rose McAvoy was walking near railroad tracks when she was struck by a Union Pacific train. A witness told Austin television station KTBC the train sounded its horn right up until the collision occurred.
McAvoy, who had been deaf since birth, won the state title in June. The state pageant director said she represented Texas "with dignity and pride."
McAvoy was to represent Texas at the Miss Deaf America pageant this summer.
...then all of a sudden, LIFE comes and smacks you in the face, right about the same time as everything is getting better.
Please, please, PLEASE tell me this is a satire?!?!?!
Why in the world would anyone walk so close to railroad tracks that they risk being hit by a train?
RIP
Very sad.
Pretty girl.
Thanks.
God bless her...
I'm so sorry to hear this - it is so horribly dangerous to walk along the tracks at any time, but for the hearing impaired even a sidewalk can be dangerous, let alone railroad tracks.
I was profoundly deaf in my early childhood (unknown to my parents until discovered later), and corrected by surgery when I was five. I cannot count how many times I was nearly run over by bikes, cars, and even pedestrians because I could not hear them coming. As a hearing person, I really take these things for granted, but it makes all the difference when out in the world.
May God comfort her family.
Yes, though fans of the sick and depraved 'darwin awards' will disagree with you and I.
I'm afraid it isn't. Someone died a horrible, gruesome death.
Which is why I was hoping this was satire. It's a sad story to begin with, and I like the Darwin Awards, but this is awful!
God rest her soul.
Awful. Simply awful and sad. RIP
All I can say is RIP. Very, very sad.

Bump By the Grace of God.
May her Light shine forever.
Prayers for her loved ones.
Same here, but we didn't catch it in time, and surgery wasn't an option, although hearing aids have helped for the last 29 years.
This sounds like it belongs on the next episode of "My Name Is Earl"
I would be alright with the darwin awards if they only applied to criminals, but unfortunately they also use "stupid people" stories.
Seriously - why not just pick on retarded people if they're going to do that?
