A large tornado has moved through Illinois and has just hit the City of Springfield. Spotters reported a large tornado moved through the city. Damage is being reported. Emergency responders are being called in from surrounding areas.
NWS reports that this was a large wedge tornado.

One my last weekend in the A.F. I was assigned CQ duty. That was NOT a good decision. We had tornado watches and warnings everywhere. Putting a Cal gal in charge of sqadron with that kind of weather. As far as I was concerned, since I was in charge I was to be the first one under the desk. Then it was every woman for herself. LOL. I wasn't into "going down with the ship" mood.
Actually it seems Branson proper was just missed to the South.
NWS just issued a warning for St Josephs County with Sound Bend...I am listening to that scanner feed...the owner has a basement and kit ready to go.

Are you in Union? I think you meant directly east of the Quad Cities. I am in Aurora, and although right now there is no wind or rain, I can hear the boomers from an apparent supercell that is supposed to have hit just west of DeKalb.
It is odd how the storms track. We are not that far from I-44 but the storms stay on the other side of the river and go in at the knee of the river in Moore time and time again. The weather people discount the old Indian legend that there was a buffalo wallow along the river during times of storms just west of Norman on the west side of the river. May be a legend but knock on wood storms with tornadoes on the ground stay across the river.

The local news in OKC said MO is in for a bad night with tornadoes wrapped in those cells all across the state.
I grew up in the midwest and from what I can remember, the severe storms were about as many in a decade as what we get in Alabama some spring months. I'd take the rarity of the midwest severe storms over this "keep a weather alarm next to your bed" state I live in now.
I have also lived in Georgia. For Alabama and GA to be next to each other, I notice that AL gets more tornadoes and GA gets more snowfall. Appears to be due to the tail end of the Appal. Mtns. and upwind of Gulf moisture.

I heard on the news that we are getting the smoke from the fires in Western OK and the TX panhandle -- seems the winds have been that strong. There is a smell of smoke in my house right now. The reporter on Channel 5 said his sinus have acted up from all the smoke and they asked everyone to stay inside.
Good thing I heard his comments or I would have gone around checking for fires around here.
Yikes! My parents live just south of Harrison, AR which is just south of Branson. Hope the storms stay north for their sake. Hope no one is hurt in these storms!
