Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

Jericho man murdered over home sale By KHALED ABU TOAMEH

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The body of an Arab resident of Jerusalem who had been accused of selling his apartment to Jews was found on Thursday morning in Jericho.

Fatah gunmen claimed responsibility for the murder.

The victim was identified as Muhammad Abu al-Hawa, 42, a father of eight from A-Tur on the Mount of Olives.

Palestinian Authority security officials said he had been shot seven times in the head and chest. They added that Abu al-Hawa had also been brutally tortured before his car was set on fire.

PA policemen discovered his torched body early Thursday morning. They later handed the body over to the Israel Police, which delivered it to the L. Greenberg Forensics Institute at Abu Kabir for an autopsy.

Abu al-Hawa's relatives said he was last seen on Wednesday night. It was unclear whether he went to Jericho willingly or had been kidnapped. His family was informed early Thursday morning that the body had been delivered to the police station in Ma'aleh Adumim. Several members of the Abu al-Hawa clan, whose members have been living on the Mount of Olives for many generations, were questioned in connection with the murder.

The victim's family was one of two families which recently sold three strategically located apartments overlooking the Temple Mount and the Old City.

The apartments were purchased through Elad, a nonprofit organization that has been buying homes in east Jerusalem for Jewish families and companies. Elad was also responsible for settling scores of Jewish families in the City of David in Silwan, a few hundred meters away from the Western Wall.

The purchase of the three apartments in A-Tur drew fierce protests from Arab residents. Over the past few weeks, residents have clashed repeatedly with the police and members of a private security firm hired to guard the apartments. It was the first time that Jews had moved into A-Tur.

Immediately after the deal became public, some members of the Abu al-Hawa clan were either kidnapped or summoned by PA security forces to Ramallah and Jericho for questioning."

Rice urges world act now to stop Darfur atrocities

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The world must act now to end the atrocities in Darfur and Sudan's government should accept it has failed to protect its own people and let a U.N. mission intervene, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Thursday.

Speaking after meeting Canada's Foreign Minister, where the two discussed Darfur and other issues, Rice insisted there must be "movement" in getting a U.N. force to supplement African troops struggling to stop the killing and rights abuses in Sudan's Darfur region.

"I understand that the Sudan government sometimes says that they don't favour this, but they have failed in their obligation to protect the people of Darfur and they clearly need international help," said Rice.

"The world needs to act," she said. "We really can't afford to wait."

The United States has said the atrocities in Darfur amount to genocide, an accusation Khartoum rejects.

U.N. military experts are planning for a peacekeeping force in western Darfur and the Security Council this week told Sudan's government and rebels to make peace in Darfur by April 30.

MARAUDING MILITIAS

The Sudanese government has not agreed to a future U.N. mission in Darfur, where conflict erupted in early 2003 when mostly non-Arab tribes took up arms, accusing the Arab-dominated Khartoum government of neglect.

The government retaliated by arming mainly Arab militias, known as Janjaweed, who began a campaign of murder, rape, arson and plunder that drove 2 million villagers into squalid camps. Khartoum denies responsibility.

Struggling from a lack of funds, about 7,000 troops from the African Union have been trying to keep the peace in Darfur, a region about the size of Texas.

"Everyone recognises that we need a more robust force that's going to come from the U.N.," said Rice. "Everyone will continue to press the Sudanese government."

Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay said his country, which provided armoured troop carriers in Darfur, had not been asked to put troops on the ground.

"I would agree that blue helmets (U.N. peacekeepers) are the solution but I am not sure that ... North American or European soldiers should be wearing those helmets," he said.

The United States has said it is premature to offer its own forces. Most of U.N. peacekeepers are expected to come from Africa and some Asian countries, with North America and Europe helping with funding, intelligence and logistics.

Washington has become increasingly upset with the Sudanese government and Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick chided Khartoum for blocking visas to U.N. officials to visit Darfur, refusing access to refugee camps and failing to agree to the U.N. mission.

In an address to the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank, Zoellick said conditions were extraordinarily fragile in Darfur, which was further destabilised by violence spilling over from neighbouring Chad.

He said aid workers' lives were at risk as their convoys were raided and the Norwegian Refugee Council had been barred from access to refugee camps.

Zoellick said it was in the Sudanese government's interests to allow the international community to intervene in Darfur.

"You either get the approval of the government ... or you invade and that is a very big, serious challenge," said Zoellick, who later made clear he was not suggesting an invasion of Sudan but rather that their cooperation was preferable to an invasion.

The violent MS-13 gang has also been detected locally, Roby told the audience, with the recent arrest of two members accused of shoplifting at Eastpoint Mall. Both were illegal immigrants from El Salvador and are in the process of being deported, he said.

While the crime with which the men were charged may be petty, Roby said the prospect of MS-13 activity in Dundalk-Edgemere is disturbing.

“We're pretty nervous about these guys,” he said.

When questioned about local membership in the national gangs, Roby assured the audience that there was no evidence of recruitment and that the gangs seemed interested only in selling drugs to local users and in establishing a presence in new territory.

I would say that our president has done a terrible job of protecting the citizens of our country against these Muslim terrorists. He and the majority of politicians both on the left and the right have deliberately left our borders wide open and unguarded. Even after the CIA warned the administration that Central American gangs (MS-13) was working with Al-Qaida in an attempt to smuggle Al-Qaida terrorists into the Untied States.

Even after the border patrol reported that between 5,000 to 9,000 illegal Muslims has crossed our unguarded borders every year since 9/11.

Coast Guard Asks Chicago Boaters To Be On Alert

CHICAGO The U.S. Coast Guard is asking Chicago boaters to be on the lookout for suspicious activity in and around the city's ports and waterways.

Boaters should "absolutely" consider the Port of Chicago vulnerable to terrorist attack and the smuggling of goods or illegal immigrants, said Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Penny Collins, program coordinator for the initiative America's Waterway Watch.

BAGHDAD, April 13, 2006 – Coalition and Iraqi forces killed a wanted extremist with high-level terrorism ties during an early morning raid March 27 near Baghdad's Abu Ghraib district, Multinational Force Iraq officials here announced today.
Rafid Ibrahim Fattah, also known as Abu Umar al-Kurdi, had ties to Taliban members in Afghanistan, Pakistan-based extremists, and al Qaeda senior leaders including Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri, officials said. He also had ties with Jaysh al Islami -- "The Islamic Army in Iraq" -- and the Iraqi resistance group Ansar al Sunnah.

Over the past six months, the Kurdi worked as a Jaysh al Islami cell leader in Baqubah, and he allegedly was involved in the kidnapping of an Iraqi woman. He traveled extensively throughout Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq over the past 15 years, and formed a relationship with al Qaeda senior leaders in 1999 while in Afghanistan, officials said.

In the 1980s, he formed ties with the Muslim Brotherhood while in Iran and Pakistan, and then he joined the "holy war" in Afghanistan in 1989. Within months, he was given the title of an al Qaeda ambassador and attended military training camps near Jalabad, where Osama bin Laden often visited.

He returned to the Muslim Brotherhood in Peshawar in 1991, and in 1992 moved to Iraq, joining the Islamic Movement of Kurdistan. Throughout the 1990s until his death, Kurdi moved between Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, holding various positions including as a liaison among terrorist networks, as an operations officer responsible for coordinating the activities of the various terrorist groups, and as a security chief for a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan.

A detainee who admitted his own affiliation with Jaysh al Islami claimed that Kurdi recruited him into the terrorist organization. The detainee claims he joined in September 2004 when Kurdi introduced him to the JAI leader .

The detainee also told officials that Kurdi kidnapped and murdered a woman several months ago. Officials confirmed the hostage-taking, and are investigating the alleged murder.

On a radio program a few weeks ago, I heard countless American workers recount how they lost contracts because illegal aliens agreed to do the work for far less and much quicker - and no wonder, because they had their entire family working, including the kids! One man who couldn't find work as a sheetrocker saw his jobs going to a man whose wife and children worked on the site. How are American workers supposed to compete with illegal (but free!) child labor?!

A really good steak needs no enhancement other than salt and freshly ground pepper...........perhaps a little garlic. JMHO.

One year for his birthday, I sent my father-in-law (God rest his soul) a box of "Omaha Steak" filet mignons. He pounded them flat, rolled them in flour, fried them in bacon grease, and then slathered them in Heinz 57. I was horrified, but loved him dearly, none the less.
