An old reminder just in time for elections tomorrow:

Muslim voters acquiring more political clout

LOS ANGELES — There are 1.8 million registered Muslim voters in the United States, and that number is predicted to increase with a new generation of young Muslim Americans coming of voting age. Politicians are slowly starting to take notice.

A Democratic forum in Michigan organized by the Arab American Institute in October was attended by all of the Democratic candidates, and Michigan will print its first Arabic language ballots for the upcoming February primary.

A Labor Day convention organized by the Islamic Society of North America included three of the presidential candidates, who showed up uninvited to talk in front of a crowd of more than 30,000.

On the university level, Muslim students are gaining attention as Monday marks the start of Islamic Awareness Week at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Agha Saeed, national chairman at the American Muslim Alliance, said that the increased political importance of Muslim Americans should be expected.

The Rise of Islam in America

Islam lies at a dangerous intersection between race and immigration.

by William Robertson Boggs

Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the United States. Partly through conversion but mainly through immigration, the number of Muslims has now risen to three or four million. At current rates of increase, there will be more Muslims than Presbyterians within the decade. Early in the next century their numbers may well grow past six million, at which point there will be more American Muslims than Jews.

Islam is not a religion that attracts whites. Although there may be as many as 1,500,000 native-born Americans who have converted to Islam they are, almost without exception, black. Heretofore, black Muslims and immigrant Muslims have had little to do with each other, but they are beginning to build alliances. Militant blacks and Middle-Eastern fundamentalists are discovering common ground, bound together in a religion that, in its extreme forms, strives to dominate all aspects of society.

Halabja must mean a new beginning

3/20/2006

As the riot erupted in Halabja on 16 March 2006, many Kurdish politicians were attending the opening of the Iraqi parliament in Baghdad. The Kurdish leaders have long argued that they have established a safe haven for democracy in their autonomous region since 1992. They say their government is a model for Iraq's future. This debatably is no longer the case.

Minor Mutations Found in Bird Flu Virus

Changes Increase Chances of Human Infection

Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology have identified what the researchers described as a possible pathway for a particularly virulent strain of the avian flu virus to "gain a foothold in the human population."

Unsafe Imports Slip Through Regulatory Net
{Includes info on TB/Mexico}

NEW YORK The poison arrived in a plastic bottle from India bearing a simple label in English and Hindi. "Useful in flu and bodyache," it read. "Two tabs twice a day or as per physician's advice."

What it didn't say was that the herbal medicine, on sale at a store in Queens, contained 2,190 times the amount of mercury considered safe by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

The tablets were among a variety of imported products seized by New York City health officials last year in immigrant-rich neighborhoods filled with exotic world goods — some of which make it onto shelves without being evaluated by safety agencies like the Food and Drug Administration.

Other products that have been the subject of recent warnings include two pesticides banned in the U.S. because they are dangerous to children: an Asian roach killer nicknamed "Chinese Chalk" and a Latin American rat poison called "Tres Pasitos," or "three little steps," referring to how far a rat can walk before succumbing to the poison.

***

Last spring, authorities urged residents to stay away from unpasteurized Mexican cheese that had turned up at groceries in Brooklyn and Queens, saying it may contain a bacterium that causes tuberculosis.

Chris Simcox Lectures at William and Mary College
Williamsburg, VA(03/20/2006): Chris Simcox, President of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corp, will be speaking at William and Mary about Illegal Immigration and the Secure Our Borders operation during April 2006.

When: Tuesday, March 21 at 8 P.M.

Where: The lecture will be held in the Great Hall of the historic 1695 Wren Building on the campus of the College of William and Mary.

The event is free and open to the public.

Chris Simcox founded the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps to observe and report illegal aliens crossing the US Border and "shame the government into doing its job" to secure and control the nation's border with Mexico and Canada.

In October 2002, Simcox issued a public call to arms calling on Americans to join a "Citizens Border Patrol Watch" whose function, Simcox said, would be to "shame the government into doing its job" of controlling the nation's border with Mexico. The Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, which patrols the border, has assisted the United States Border Patrol in detaining more than 8000 illegal aliens, during the last 3 years. In April 2005, Simcox expanded the effort and Minutemen from across the nation organized a Minuteman Border Project which brought nationwide attention to the problem of illegal aliens crossing the border.

Mr. Simcox's lecture will be followed by a question and answer session. The event is being sponsored by the William and Mary College Republicans, the Christopher Newport University College Republicans, the Virginia Commonwealth University College Republicans, the Remnant, and the William and Mary Standard.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

[At] such a pace, we'll start bombing in June. -- --Russian U.N.Ambassador Andrei Denisov, objecting to a push by Western powers in the U.N. Security Council to set a two-week deadline for Iran to suspend its nuclear activities.

Iraqi Documents Show Attempts at WMD Deception

Documents confiscated by the United States following the invasion of Iraq indicate that Iraqi officials discussed how to deceive U.N. inspectors looking for weapons of mass destruction in the 1990s, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, March 16).

I started a post devoted to those documents here:

-The Iraq Documents--

In particular, The Pajamas Media ( link provided ) has a page dedicated to what is found, as do several other sites. It will be interesting- probably no blockbusters, but a steady drip, drip, drip, of information for years.

5.5 is usually like a heavy truck going by with a little wave action and maybe a jolt at the end -- not a big deal in Calif., but unknown what it feels like in Pakistan.

Indian court lets off minister who put bounty on Danish cartoonists

"Unfortunate," yes. But not all that out of line with what they believe, evidently. From AFP, with thanks to Sr. Soph:

NEW DELHI - An India court on Monday rejected demands for action against a lawmaker who put a bounty of 11.5 million dollars on the heads of Danish cartoonists who drew controversial images of the Prophet Mohammed.
A three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Y. K. Sabharwal described as “unfortunate” the offer made by Mohammed Yaqoob Qureshi, a minister in the Uttar Pradesh state government, last month.

The court, however, said it cannot “entertain” such appeals and suggested the petitioner, Vijay Kumar Tiwari, register a criminal complaint with the police against the firebrand Muslim politician.

Qureshi told a Muslim rally after Friday prayers last month that he would give “the avenger” 510 million rupees (11.5 million dollars) and his weight in gold....

Denmark last week agreed indefinitely to postpone an April 2 visit by Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen after New Delhi reportedly warned the trip could rekindle protests in India, home to 130 million Muslims.

New FAIR Study: U.S. Population Will Hit 500 Million by 2050 With Amnesty

Depending on what Congress decides to do about immigration - curtail it, expand it - the United States is facing a future population just 45 years away that could vary by more than 135 million residents. The difference between the highest and the lowest of the scenarios represents the population size issue that Congress and the administration should be focused on as the debate on immigration policy develops this year. If a guest-worker amnesty like the Specter bill passes this year, U.S. population will top 500 million by 2050. State by State population projections are also available at FAIR's site in the research section. Click the extended immigration data page for your state and then the link for population projection.
