What Is the Greatest Musical Work of All Time?
3/1/2006 | Reaganesque

I was sitting here tonight listening to Mozart's Requiem and I got to thinking: what do I consider to be the best work of music ever? For my part, Mozart's work really does the trick for me when I need to be re-energized. Therefore, I believe that his Requiem is the greatest work of all time. There just isn't another work that is as powerful and passionate. When the chorus sings the final "Amen" at the end of "Lacrimosa" I get the feeling that he knew it was the last thing he would ever write. It gives me chills at times.

Other favorites are:

Handel's Messiah

The 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky

"The William Tell Overture" with the amps cranked up to all the speakers can stand. 2nd, "Don't fear the reaper". 3rd, "I Ran".

Reply to post #46, Terry Jacks was talented, but his beautiful wife Rita Jacks had a song that really rocks. On the "A Good Thing Lost" album "That's where I went wrong". Did I say beautiful, outstandingly beautiful and talented.

I don't know about, "greatest," but I've always found this piece to be incredibly versatile....it's perfectly appropriate for stirring one awake in the morning, or falling asleep to at night; it's a comfrotable fit at funerals and weddings alike. It sells lightbulbs, celibrates victories and consoles defeats...

Maybe not perfect, but certainly divinely inspired.

I just dropped it in the CD player.

I'm working from home today, so I get to listen to my favorites all day.

After hearing Luciano Pavarotti sing Nessun Dorma at the Olympics I ordered a CD of tenor arias from Amazon.

It came this morning; I've listened to N.D. 3 times; and I think I have a new contender.

Debussy has no peers...period.

I'm particularlky fond of Preludes, Book I, No.8: The Girl With The Flaxen Hair and Claire de Lune.

I have a recording of a unique approach to Debussy by Isao Tomita...all electronic, and incredibly emotive.

The recording was re-released not too long ago under the name "Snowflakes Are Dancing".

You should get the CD "Pachelbel's Greatest Hit" (BMG Classic)

It's got 8 different versions of the Canon in D, including one by the Canadian Brass, and one by James Galway, plus the more stylistically accurate Baroque version.

It really is a masterpiece.
