What Is the Greatest Musical Work of All Time?

I was sitting here tonight listening to Mozart's Requiem and I got to thinking: what do I consider to be the best work of music ever? For my part, Mozart's work really does the trick for me when I need to be re-energized. Therefore, I believe that his Requiem is the greatest work of all time. There just isn't another work that is as powerful and passionate. When the chorus sings the final "Amen" at the end of "Lacrimosa" I get the feeling that he knew it was the last thing he would ever write. It gives me chills at times.

Other favorites are:

Handel's Messiah

The 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky

Mozart is great. I like a wide variety of music, from Johnny Cash to Zydeco.

Most favourite musical South Pacific. Gorgeous music there.

I'd have to go with the Brandenburg Concertos by J. S. Bach, or else Palestrina's Missa Papae.

Good choice. The fifth is marvelous too. Klemperer's rendition of Brahams 4th deeply affected in college. But the piece I heard in a concert hall, that most affected me was Britten's War Requiem. When the music evoked the moment of death of a young man on the killing fields of WW I, the chills going down my spine, I feel now thinking about it, almost as much as then.

Bach Brandenburg Concertos
Beethoven's Seventh
Handel Royal Fireworks
Wagner Ring Operas (or as I like to call it, the original Lord of the Rings)

Yeah. I mean, I love Bach but when I'm sloppy drunk and skidding in the vomit on the high-school gym floor, I really can't pronounce "Das Wohltemperirte Klavier" but I can shout "BlaysssomeSkynnrdddmaaaaannnn..."

I am no particular fan of Skynyrd.....it just that when that song comes on the radio down here, everybody stops, removes their hat and puts their hand over their heart. It's pathetic, really....
