I preferred it when the Olympic Games - both Winter and Summer - were held on the same year every four years. It was nice to have a ban on participation by pro athletes, too. The only pros were those fielded by communist countries, and defeating them was oh-so-sweet.

Some entertainment, mostly overhype and terrible coverage by NBC.

Thanks Howlin.

It is always a little sad to see the games end, isn't it.

I hope the closing show is good. :]

On the upswing.. I don't watch much TV- so I am ready for a break from the TV.

Rudy Giuliani was asked by Pres. Bush to be part of the Official US Delegation at the Closing Ceremony.

SO LET THE MADNESS BEGIN !!!

To: Howlin; All

I didn't pay too much attention to these Olympics, I'm more a summer olympics person, but Howlin you deserve a pat on the back for posting these threads, I'm sure many freepers have enjoyed them.

I did watch a show on the strange UHD (univeral hi def?) channel today which told the story of Italian Bobsledder Eugenio Monti, his long and frustrating quest to win Olympic Gold, and his incredible sportsmanship and sense of fair play in providing crucial help to both the British and Canadian teams, who both beat his own Italian team. This all took place in the 50s & 60s. It was a very good presentation, had a lot of archival footage, including much that featured Curt Gowdy, which was quite coincidentally appropriate.

It was NBC stuff, but I don't know if it got broadcast on any of their other coverage. An inspiring story, one I was glad to hear.

I haven't watched these, but when I mentioned the attitude of that skier, two friends told me the US Olympics folks and the commentators were wrong to jump all over them, that they were using Nazi tactics and this was a collectivist event, etc, and he was just doing his own thing and having fun.

My response was that if he voluntarily signed on to represent his nation in this collectivist event, he has signed on to do just that. No one forced him to; no one surprised him with the rules later. He knew that there is a certain image the committee wants to put across.

Don't like it? Fine--don't sign on to represent your country. Turn pro, and see how much money and respect you get when you don't win anything but have a good time partying.

I don't get the attitude that this guy who joined this team voluntarily is some kind of a rebel just because he parties and doesn't listen to The Authorities or whatever. Don't you enter a sporting event to win?

Thanks for posting this thread. I still enjoy the Olympics. It is a true reality show, with real people demonstrating incredible athletic prowess. No amount of money can make a person the fastest, highest or most graceful. It might make them a jerk, but that's another story.

I'd like to thank you for posting these live threads every day. I rarely post, but truly enjoyed following these threads as I watched tv every night. It enhanced my Olympic viewing.

Now that it's almost over I think my husband is really gonna miss me saying, "Shut up Dick!", during all the figure skating.

Thanks again Howlin!

I didn't follow the controversy closely, but ....

Olympic teams aren't chosen up on the airplane ride over there. They are chosen months in advance. So, if the Black athlete was 'chosen' and agreed to represent, he should have fulfilled his obligation. Otherwise, he occupied a position that some other aspiring athlete may have been glad to take -- and he bailed at the last moment, putting the team in a bind for a replacement.
