Do you remember that Allen used to read the letters to the editor with expression,as if they were spoken? He would use gestures also.

It was hysterical.

Honestly, I don't remember specifically that, no. I think the thing that impressed me most about Allen was the off-the-cuff (and frequently muttered) ad-lib quips he would make. Of course this was live TV - unexpected things would happen and he was so quick, funny, creative and sharp in his responses.

He was a very good actor and very funny too. I will watch my dvd's of The Incredible Mr. Limpet and I also own 4 movies in the reluctant hero box set which include: The Reluctant Astronaut, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, The Shakiest Gun in the West and The Love God.

The Shakiest Gun in the West is my favorite. The others are comic masterpieces as well. I always appreciated how Don Knotts' entire life was based on making everyone happy. God Bless You, Don!

Prince of a Man. Brought a lot of joy to - a more innocent world. RIP Don.

I hear that Andy is not in such great shape either.

I think of him in "The Shakiest Gun In The West", where he played a mild-mannered dentist who comes into town, and gets talked into(?)being the Sheriff, or something. Anyway, this young woman who is a reforming crook herself, cons him into marrying her for cover. Apparently she's trying to help the law to catch some other criminals. She gets snatched by some Indians, and so he goes into the indian camp to save her(one of the funniest parts!). He dresses as a female indian, and some of the men takes a shine to him!

The women keep handing him their babies to hold, and these male indians keep hitting on him, wanting to marry him! Well, he saves the pretty redhead, and he saves the day! He gives the chief a new set of teeth, so he can eat, too. Like I said, that had to be one of the funniest movies I've seen him in!

Oh yeah, that one! He was tied up in the kitchen, and convinces the big one(?) to untie him? But what he said to convince her was simply side-splitting! He said something like(with a sultry tone)"You're getting to me!" LOL And with the look he had on his face, and what (he hoped) was a sexy-sounding voice, he did get her to untie him. And that was hilarious!

Well, it was a timeless classic. Even today it's still good.

And sadly, the sort of good natured humor he excelled at is also gone.

I was fortunate enough to meet Steve Allen twice and correspond with him, and I can attest that he and Tony Randall were the most amazingly nice and decent people I've met in 30 years of working around showbiz. Both went way out of their way to help me, even though I was just a kid from the country who wanted to be a comedy writer, had no contacts, and asked them for help out of the blue. Both of them bent over backwards to help me, simply out of the kindness of their hearts. Believe me, that is incredibly rare.

BTW, someone asked if Barney and Andy were cousins. I believe that in very early episodes of the show, Barney called Andy "Cousin Andy," but they quickly dropped it. You'll also notice that in earlier episodes, Andy has a much thicker accent and is more clownish, but he quickly settled down. As someone earlier noted, he realized the show worked better with Don and the other Mayberry eccentrics as the comics and him as the straight man.

He was great on Three's company.
Three's company was one of my favorite shows.
John Ritter and Don are together again.

God Bless Don Knotts! He was a classic and brought much happiness and humor to this world. I'll miss him. There will never be another Barney Fife.

Wasn't Andy and Don....were they not cousins?

They were; but mentioned only in the first season, IIRC.

One of my all time favorite movies as a kid was "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken". I mentioned it to my husband this morning and his eyes lit up as we remembered favorite parts of that movie.

Thanks for all the entertainment Mr. Knotts. Rest in Peace.

When he's on the podium... shaking like a leaf and his speech blows away... I laugh so hard I almost cry. What a great comic... never better!

LOL! What a great movie. I was a kid when I first saw it, and that organ music freaked me out. Another great flick was "The Reluctant Astronaut".

Luther's speech:

"I have been called brave. What is brave? Let me clarify this. Of course we all know this is short for brave-r-y. That goes without even being said. But is also a symbol of another thing. It is a symbol of doing one's duty no matter what is scarring him personally. Take your World War II. There was many heroes in World War II. What were your heroes? Who were your heroes? Let me clairfy this. Thank you for having me!"

LOL! Thanks for the speech 'transcript'.

Knotts knew he had the looks of a guy who could play a perennial-loser to the max... and made it an art-form... he was a comic-artisan. There was another scene in “ ...Mr. Chicken” where the 'villain' says to him “You miserable, little pipsqueak... just who do you think you are?!!”

Knotts... shaking like a leaf stammers... “Drop dead... that's who!” and runs like hell!

He was legend.
