Earlier in the episode he asked Opie the same question about fighting fire and Opie gave him the same answer as Andy.

"The reluctant astronaut", that's some picture; as well as his other movies, check them out.

His hometown in that movie was in Missouri, and one of the characters was named Rush.

Otis: "Bar-ney's in ja-il. Bar-ney's in ja-il!"
Barney:"Shut up, Otis. Just shut up."
Otis (clanging tin cup on jail bars): "Hey Barney, know what this means? We're breaking out tonight!"
Barney: "Nip it Otis. Would you just nip it?"
Otis (clang, clangclang, clang):" Hey Barney, know what I'm saying now? Bar-ney's in ja-il, Bar-ney's in ja-il!"

Thanks! I couldn't remember where the fighting fire question came from! Funny!

Yes, a very funny bunch of guys, and you forgot, Louis Nye, who was part of the team, he died last October. They were all in Steve Allen's nightly skit, Man on the Street. Hilarious.

Barney Fife, greatest sitcom character ever.

I once heard Andy Griffith call him the greatest character actor of all time. Andy was right.

Fox Radio News reported earlier that Andy and his wife were at Don's bedside when he died.

This look-a-like was in our town awhile back. Very funny guy.

Don was one of the best. We still watch him on TAGS. Sad day.

I also want to cry. I grew up with him in all his famous roles, and he was always a class act. Thank you and R.I.P., dear Mr. Knotts.

Are you serious? I had no idea they were that close. Is this true?

I recently bought a video tape of some of the old shows. They were so great, nice people, taught life lessons...when TV was good.

I first remember him as the nervous guy on the Steve Allen Show in the fifties.

Makes me grin just to remember it. So long ago, but the pleasure you gave us continues on, Don. Thank you.

Tom Poston, who played a guy who could not remember his name..

Ah, people call me it all the time! (grin)

...was a cheery short of guy, who went by the name of Gordon Hathaway.

I think that was Louis Nye

Steve Allen was a real genius and a unique talent but with people like Knotts, Poston and Nye the show moved from being just excellent to an all-time classic.

Andy evidently remained closed to Don and helped him through some rough times in his personal life. Andy also had him as a semi-regular on Matlock.
