First there is NO American corporation capable of operating our ports. The London based company that was doing this job, Britain’s Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. was one of a very few capable of doing it.

For me, this is the big news here!

What has obstructed American companies from operating American ports?!

Is it unions, government regulations or confiscatory taxes?

I also know this, if I were on the Halliburton’s board of directors, I would get my lobbyists activated, and put a team of experts together and come up with a strong port operations proposal immediately.

And the dems would fall in line supprting Halliburton's bid.

I was against this deal until I read that Chinese companies run some of our other ports. If the Chinese why not the UAE?

Excellent, excellent article. Thanks for posting. Answered many questions I had, if I can believe what this person is reporting. (Isn't it sad that now days you have to question everything you read)...anyway, thanks for posting. I hope we can find an American company to perform this duty.

Second, the President has no authority to prevent the sale of British P & O to the Dubai State owned corporation, Dubai Ports World

I stopped there. Somebody give the guy a link to CIFIUS.

When I was taking placement tests for freshman college, somewhere in the room was a boy named......

Phil T. Smith.

I chuckled all through the tests just thinking about his name.

Are you related?...:>)

There are currently no American alternatives to Dubai Ports World. I

Why is that? Are Americans mentally incapable of running a port? How about SSA Marine which just won Umm Qasr port in Iraq?

"The family-owned and -run company is a private venture which operates in more than 150 locations worldwide and employs more than 10,000 people. The Smith and Hemingway families have owned the company since it was founded, and maintain an active management role."

Hmmm, who should run our ports? A company run by Smith and Hemingway, or one run by Mohammed and Achmed?

Ah yes it's so much better to have a President that takes a poll before making a decision. Agree with the President or not, he's the one with the job, and I respect his decision even if I disagree. As far as the reaction, why should that be his problem? Being President isn't about popularity.

And for those complaining about the deal, give me a realistic alternative, that won't take years to implement.

I have always been under the impression that it may be Duabi's and UAE's oil money but it Palestinian professionals who keep the country running.

"A Tone Deaf President: A Hyperventilating Opposition"

The secret of Bush's success is his tone-deafness. He simply doesn't react to the opposition, so they end up going stark raving mad.

The dopey Washington insiders and apologists like Rush have all said the same thing, there are no American companies that can run a terminal, so how did the USA develop the Manhattan project in WWII? There were demonstrably no companies that had any experience enriching Uranium and building a bomb but somehow DuPont and other companies managed to get the work done. So, based on the first sentence of the post, should the USA find ourselves in trouble and the only company that could produce, say the weapons of war are our enemy (like exactly what is happening right now with respect to Asia) then we should just resign ourselves to being defeated?

I say, if GWB doesn't backtrack on this, allow a 45 day period for review and testimony, and only then make a decision, then I say he should be brought up on charges. Impeach him. And I BTW, am a supporter of the GOP and GWB, but this can't stand.
