NEW YORK - A New York City man has been hospitalized with a case of anthrax that a federal law enforcement official said may have been contracted from animal skins during a visit to Africa.

The infection appeared to be accidental, and authorities did not believe it was related to terrorism, the official said.

The man traveled recently to the west coast of Africa and became ill shortly after his return, said a federal law enforcement official, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

It was not clear how the man came into contact with the deadly substance, but aides to Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it was related to his job as a drummer and that federal and city officials traced the exposure to New York City after the man became ill in Pennsylvania.

Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly were expected to discuss the case at a City Hall news conference. Aides to the mayor said the man was recovering in a hospital in Sayre, Pa.

Weeks after the 2001 terrorist attacks, the nation was on high alert as anthrax-laced letters surfaced in several places, including New York City. NBC anchor Tom Brokaw, two U.S. senators and the offices of the New York Post were among the targets.

The anthrax attacks killed five people across the country and sickened 17. Investigators have not determined who was responsible.

This would be the second case of inhlational anthrax in the US since the attacks of 2001. You can bet there was a huge security alert, but the article doesn't yet say when the man was first diagnosed.

ping. What's interesting here is how long it took to be announced. Was it 1 week ago he was diagnosed, 1 day ago?

Before Bloomberg's announcement Shep Smith on Studio B was very sarcastic about how someone could "accidentally" contract anthrax. The smarta** found out as soon as the Mayor announced it. And he claims to be a journalist.

I could believe "contact" anthrax from the drum skins, but not "inhalation" anthrax.

So let me get this straight. The Drummer from Anthrax got sick in Africa?

Apparently the spores get aerosolized when the animal drum skin is struck with the drumstick. It's very rare but can happen if the skin came from an infectted animal.
